The Bogalusa National Guard was organized on December 15, 1917. The first units were organized in Monroe, Louisiana. On January 1, 1918 the first unit of the Bogalusa National Guard was activated and served with distinction in World War I. In 1935 the Bogalusa National Guard became a State Militia under the jurisdiction of the Louisiana Department of Defense. The state militia was disestablished on July 1, 1974 when its functions were transferred to the present day National Guard Bureau within the Department of Homeland Security. In 1941, a new battalion was activated in Alvin which served until 1946 when it moved to Thibodaux where it remained until 1954 when it relocated to New Orleans and divided into two battalions which continued serving there until 1959 when they returned to Alvin. From 1959-1974 all troops from Alvin were reassigned to New Orleans and Thibodaux before being re-activated in 1984 at Lafayette where they remain today as an infantry battalion assigned to Commanders Brigade Combat Team 5th Infantry Regiment (Airborne) Headquarters Battalion headquartered at Camp Polk outside Baton Rouge. On October 25th, 2002 Hurricane Katrina damaged or destroyed many businesses in southeastern Louisiana including those located near Baton Rouge and St Tammany Parish making national guard gifts necessary for relief purposes especially as military personnel were recalled from their duties for home protection.

This system continued until 1947 when it was repealed by congress due to budgetary problems. After World War II, there were large increases in both numbers and size of the National Guard. This meant that more people were able to be called up for duty and also that there were more opportunities for them to serve their country properly. One important piece of legislation that came about during this time was The Good Friday Agreement which createdthe Irish Republican Army (IRA). As part of this agreement, Ireland agreed not to fight against Great Britain during wartime and also agreed not to create any type of independent state within Northern Ireland. The IRA’s activities eventually caused British troops to invade Northern Ireland in 1969 and 1973 known as Operation Neptune’s Spear. Due to these events, most members of the Irish Guards who did not support IRA activity left their units and joined up with other forces loyal to Great Britain instead.
