Bogalusa, Louisiana is a small town located in Livingston Parish, Louisiana. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is the only incorporated municipality in Livingston Parish. The first European to visit Bogalusa was Antonio de Landa on October 21, 1598. He named it after the Santa Bárbara River that flowed through his homeland of Cartagena de Indias. French traders and missionaries established trading posts here in the 18th century. In 1710, Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne founded what is now Lafayette College in Bogalusa. In 1818, a group of soldiers from New Orleans under General Andrew Jackson invaded Lafourche Parish and destroyed most of the sugar cane plantations there before moving on to Butler Parish. In response, Brigadier General James Kenedy organized a militia known as "The First Infantry" and built a military Fort Kenedy near present-day Bogalusa to protect against repeated attacks by Jackson's forces....................................... A post office called Bogalusa was established on July 14, 1836, by Major John Hickey with two mail coaches transporting mail between Baton Rouge and New Orleans........... After Reconstruction era ended in America around 1870s white people began arriving in large numbers............. cotton fields becameunprofitable due to increased competition from other crops...... lumber mills also opened up during this time.................... By 1880s few people remained here............................ By 1920s about 60% of residents were African Americans ................. Bogalusa was founded in 1811 by General Andrew Jackson and named for the boga fruit tree found near the town site. In 1892, Bogalusa became part of New Orleans and experienced rapid growth due to its location on the Mississippi River between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. In 1916, Bogalusa merged with neighboring parish to form one municipality; however, this merger failed to take hold due to open competition from other municipalities within Livingston Parish. Bogalusa has been known for its cotton gin production since the early 1800s. The first cotton gin in Louisiana was built in Bogalusa by John Kirby in 1824. Bogalusa's cotton gin became one of the most important cotton gins in Louisiana until it closed during World War II because of wartime shortages of materials. The Boggs Cotton Gin Company operated a small mill here until 1954 when it bought out Kirby's interest and continued operations as Boggs Cotton Mill until 1984 when it closed down again because of lack of demand for textile products related to Hurricane Katrina which had devastated southern Louisiana during that period.
