Bogalusa, Louisiana is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 5,818 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Shreveport Metropolitan Statistical Area. The land that would become Bogalusa was first settled by Caddo Indians in the 17th century. The first European to see it was Pierre Laclède on October 14, 1606 when he anchored off the coast of what is now Bogalusa and noted its "beautiful bayous" and "tall woods." In 1802, Captain John Demarest charted a course for Mobile Bay and named it after his mentor General James Wilkinson. He reached Mobile Bay on September 25 but foundered because of bad weather in the Straits of Florida. In 1811 Nicholas-Jacques Dessalines founded Baton Rouge as an outpost on the east bank of the Mississippi River between Baton Rouge and Prairie du Chien (now Waco) after founding Ville Platte near present day Lafayette, LA. On November 15, 1811 General James Wilkinson delivered an address in which he called upon all Americans to unite in defense of their rights against British aggression under Governor Amable Morin's command: "There are few men living who can boast more than I do that we have been instrumental – through our united efforts – in saving this country from three years' occupation by those barbarians; that we have repelled their repeated assaults with tolerable success; not only have our arms furnished them with no support but they themselves have availed us nothing short of famine and disease...So long as any man remains here who wishes to be a credit to his country or die fighting for her liberties let him give himself up without further delay." On December 10th President James Kenedy signed legislation authorizing Colonel John Marshall to lead an army into Texas provided he could secure permission from Mexico City before leaving for Texas from his office at Monterey Hall located within Mexican territory adjacent to where Baton Rouge then stood. Colonel Marshall left for Mexico City on January 20th via Brownsville Roadstead (present day Interstate 30). After reaching Monterrey February 3rd he obtained permission from Emperor Agustín de la Cueva y Osorio para cross into Texcoco territory along modern day US 190 south of Ennis TX whereupon hostilities ensued between American forces commanded by Captain David Rainsford and Mexican military officer Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla over control of San Antonio de Béjarán Creek junction near present day Ebro River Bridge just east of today's downtown Bogalusa. A brief engagement resulted in less than five killed while about twenty Mexican soldiers were killed including Hidalgo y Costilla who hadubmitted suicide rather than accept American surrender conditions which would have ended Spanish colonial rule over what is now Louisiana
