When Bogalusa, Louisiana was founded in 1804, it was a small settlement of about fifty households. The first settlers were the Muskogee and Creeks who had come from Georgia. In 1840, two brothers by the name of Stroud purchased land in what is now Bogalusa. They named their farm “Stroud” after themselves. By 1850, there were over one hundred residents in Bogalusa and it became a stop on the Longview & Pascagoula Railroad. In 1892, a group of men from Atlanta came to Bogalusa to purchase some land for a cotton plantation. One of these men was Johnnie Cochran who would go on to become one of Louisiana’s most famous governors and U.S. Senators. When he died in office, his son J.C.] Cochran Jr., inherited his father’s plantation and renamed it “Cochran-Henderson Plantation” after himself and his brother-in-law Alexander Henderson (1798-1877). This plantation would play an important role in the history of Bogalusa because it was where General Nathan Bedford Forrest shot at President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War; this event is also known as “The Battle of Chickamauga” In 1896, another group of men from Atlanta came to Bogalusa again to purchase more land for a cotton plantation which they called “Gourd Neck Plantation” After purchasing this property, they built a large home that still stands today on Gourd Neck Road across from Mount Carmel Baptist Church In 1937, Randolph Hearst acquired Gourd Neck Plantation which he renamed Hearst Castle which continues to be used as a hotel today One significant event that took place in Bogalusa during this time period was the rise to power of Huey Long who became governor in 1928 and served until 1935 when he resigned because he disapproved of Franklin D Roosevelt becoming president After Huey Long left office, Governor James Wolk appointed Earl Warren as his replacement but Warren only lasted six months before being impeached by the United States Senate Warren then retired from politics permanently while many other statesmen followed suit such as Richard Nixon who would later become president

In 1861, Bogalusa became part of the United States when it was acquired by Louisiana. The town experienced some growth during Reconstruction but sharply declined after the end of Reconstruction. In 1900, Bogalusa was renamed for General John J. Pershing who served in World War I and II as Commander of American Forces in Europe. After World War II, several factories closed down which led to a decline in population and commerce until the late 1990s when there has been slight resurgence with new business establishments The history of Bogalusa is reflective of its location on rickety wagonroads that connected together small villages throughout Mississippi Valley region including Mobile Bayou (now ceded to Texas), Baton Rouge (then Jefferson Parish), New Orleans (then Orleans Parish), Lafayette (then Plaquemine Parish) and more importantly Opelousas/Bogaluska County situated along Mobile Bayou between Lake Pontchartrain and Tangipahoa River floodplain where Tensas Plantation operated for over two centuries from 1785 until it went bankrupt in 1850 . European settlement commenced with French colonists moving from their strongholds around 1698 along with African slaves brought over by Spain under contracts negotiated at Saint Domingue . These slave arrivals took place primarily within what is now Acadiana , then Pointe Coupee parish eastward into Baton Rouge parish , East Feliciana parish southwestward into Livingston Parish before reaching Opelousas/Bogaluska County where sugar plantations were established beginning about 1785 with initial crops grown on upland sites near present day Bogalusa while mobile transportation facilitated plantaginage below water’s surface utilizing hogsheads filled with rice straw which was then floated downriver to markets located at Biloxi or New Orleans
