The name of the town comes from the Creek word "bog" meaning bog and "alusia" meaning a field or piece of land. The first permanent European settler in what is now Bogalusa was Pierre Villefort, who built a small post on the banks of the Natchez River in 1785. He named his settlement after his friend and mentor, Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville. In 1803, General Andrew Jackson moved Ulysses S. Grant's army through this area during the Redeemer's Cause War to attack Spanish forces near New Orleans. General Jackson's troops discovered Spanish attempts to build an impenetrable battery on Bogalusa Hill and destroyed it with cannon fire on July 25, 1803.
