In 1971, Italian immigrants Giovanni Agnelli and Salvatore DeLuca founded D’Angelo Coffee Company in Bogalusa. They became known for their high-quality Columbian roast beans and innovative design features on their espresso machines. Throughout its history, D’Angelo Coffee has been a major force behind the development of artisan coffee culture throughout Louisiana. The history of artisan coffee in Bogalusa, Louisiana goes back to the early 1800s. Coffee was first grown in this area by African Americans who were enslaved. After their emancipation, these black men and women began cultivating and exporting coffee. This established the local industry which still thrives today.
Bogalusa, Louisiana (formerly Bogalusa Parish) is a parish located in the southeastern corner of Louisiana. As of the 2010 census, its population was 21,362. The parish seat is Bogalusa. The first significant settlement in what is now Bogalusa Parish was made by French traders and planters fleeing the religious persecutions that characterized France during the 16th century. In 1811, Captain John Smith discovered and named an island in Lake Pontchartrain after his patron saint, St. Pierre de la Croix. This island became known as Saints Island because so many French Catholics settled there during the early 1800s. In 1836, a group of Mississippian refugees who had left their homes on the Illinois side of the Mississippi River came to Baton Rouge and were taken in by General Andrew Johnson’s Department of War. They were given land on which to build their homes and called themselves “The Arkansas Model Workers” or “The Prairie Boys” for short because they worked mainly on farms near Arkadelphia north of Baton Rouge. In 1838, President Jackson signed a bill creating Bogalusa Parish from parts of Rapides and Monroe parishes; it was projected that only 9 percent of the total population would live within its boundaries at its creation but this prediction proved true when Bogalusa Parish reached 15,000 residents by 1840. Bogalusa, Louisiana (locally known as "Bogalusa Bayou") is a small town located on the Gulf of Mexico in Lafourche Parish, Louisiana. The population was 2,567 at the 2010 census. It is also the home to Bogalusa Naval Air Station, which is used for training naval aviators and their families. The town was founded by French Creole settlers in 1814. The name Bogalusa comes from an Indian word meaning "place where two rivers meet." In 1821, John P. Chilton purchased land from the Erikwateuse tribe and named it after himself - Bogalusa Bayou became Bogalusa Parish in 1825. In 1886, Bogue Plantation began operations as a cotton plantation with about 80 slaves working on it. By 1912, however, it had become one of the largest slave plantations in eastern Louisiana. After Union forces burned down that plantation during World War II, many of its slaves were freed and moved to other plantations throughout the parish until 1946 when all but a few slaves were finally emancipated. The first post office in Bogalusa opened in 1865; it remained open until 1907. In 1899-1900, local farmers formed a cooperative to purchase 300 acres (120 hectares) of upland near present-day Bogalusa Naval Air Station to develop as agricultural land for growing crops and raising livestock; this project failed due to lack of interest among landowners and farmers within the area around Bogalusso Harbor who did not want their land disturbed by military activity or air traffic development associated with NAS Hog Island Airport nearby
Bogalusa is a small town located in the parish of Bogalusa, in the central region of Louisiana. The town was founded by French colonists in 1762. The name Bogalusa comes from the Choctaw word "bogalusa," meaning "a swampy place." The first white settlers arrived in what is now Bogalusa County in 1762, and began to clear land for farming. By 1800, the area had grown enough that a post office was established, and by 1810, there were three churches and two schools in the town. In 1812, a group of United States Marines led by Commodore John Chalmers invaded Louisiana to free slaves who had been captured at Fort Moultrie on Mobile Bay. They discovered that many local Native Americans were also enslaved, so they burned most of the buildings and stores inside the new town of Bogalusa before crossing into Indian Territory. This event is known as the Battle of Bogalusa.
