In the early 1800s, the Baton Rouge Navy Yard was one of the most active naval yards in America. The yard was built in 1801 and served as a shipyard for the French Navy until it was sold to the United States in 1815. The navy built over 50 warships during its time at Baton Rouge, many of which still survive today. The first USS Baton Rouge (1801-1802) was built here at the navy yard and became part of American forces fighting against Napoleon Bonaparte. During World War I, USS Baton Rouge fought on both sides of the conflict, serving with distinction during both wars. She is now a museum vessel and is used by LSU students as an educational resource. USS Louisiana (Tripoli) (LST-521) was also built at Baton Rouge in 1901 and served as a training ship for Naval Aviator pilots during World War II. She later became a museum ship in New Orleans before she was transferred to La Salle University in Illinois where she remains today as a research vessel. USS Louisville (CA-813) also served as a training ship for Naval Aviator pilots during World War II before becoming an auxiliary cruiser stationed at Guantanamo Bay Cuba after the war ended. After her tour of duty, she returned to US service and played an important role in anti-submarine warfare operations off Long Beach California until she decommissioned in 1979. USS Nevada (BB-36) also participated in anti-submarine warfare operations during World War II before being transferred to Korea where she served until her return to LAUSILAS In 1960. She has since been restored back to her prewar status and serves as an exhibit space at Louisiana State University’s campus.-After WWI ended, due to budgetary constraints within the military, only 6 ships were ever produced from thisyards – all destroyers! However 3 more ships were completed but never launched because they were cancelled due To budget cuts & political changes brought about by Woodrow Wilson's presidency

The navy also deployed units during both Gulf War I and II. Since 9/11, there have been multiple deployments by the U.S Navy with Special Operations Forces (SOF) Troops being sent to Afghanistan as well as Iraq and Syria Beach Team Deployments (BTDs). These deployments are meant to provide capabilities that can not be provided by other branches of our military such as air or land forces alone. Naval unit detachments have also become more common with sailors being assigned ashore specifically for counterterrorism operations such as Joint Task Force-West Africa (JTF-WAF) which is responsible for monitoring Islamist militants in West Africa
