The Marine Corps has a long and proud history in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The city was founded by French colonists in 1763 as Baton Rouge, and the Marines were first activated there on October 25,1862. The city was also home to the world’s first Marine Barracks in 1871. Today, the Marines are one of the largest armed forces in Louisiana and their presence can be seen throughout the city. In addition to their barracks and military posts, businesses across Baton Rouge have donated donations of equipment or products to help support the Marines. Some of these include: Alamo Pizza (1948), JCPenney (1970), Mastercard (1978), P&G (1981), KFC (1986) and Coca-Cola (1991). In 2007, local entrepreneur Tariq Sheikh donated $2 million to help fund a new gymnasium for LSU’s School of Business Administration. This gift helped turn Baton Rouge into one of the most active cities for marine recruitments in Louisiana. In honor of this donation, Sheikh is now known as “Marine mayor” within the community because he has been able to make an impact on multiple aspects related to military engagement within Baton Rouge.
Marines have always been a part of the military and there are many different branches that they can serve in. Marines can be deployed as either combat or support units. Combat units are typically used for war-time operations, while support units provide logistical support to the troops in battle. Marine Sergeant Lance Corporal Dustin Wiest told The Huffington Post about one deployment where he was a marine unit's gunnery sergeant. "We would go out on patrols and sniper positions," he said. "It was definitely an intense experience." Marine Cpl. Nathan Griggs also served in a combat unit, but is now a corporal with the marines' supply battalion. He said that his deployment was more emotional than physical because it involved fighting alongside his fellow marines who were from different countries and cultures. In terms of service members' reactions to deployments, Griggs said that most people are mobilization aback due to their loved ones being deployed too, but once they get home they start to process all of what has happened and start planning for their next deployment which could be any time soon. Some marines even choose not to deploy again due to thetraumatic effects it has had on them such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). For those marines who do deploy again, Ptsd is something that they deal with on a daily basis since it can continue after an individual leaves service or when someone dies in action.

Cory Joseph Smith was killed while conducting combat patrols near Saddam Hussein’s Baghdad home. His death caused public outcry across Louisiana and around the world due to his role as a marine officer and member of a team that risked their lives to protect civilians from imminent danger. In 2012, Marine Brigadier General Charles Burton took command of 5th Marines Brigade which is headquartered in Baton Rouge. This brigade provides essential logistical support for both Operation Neptune's Spear (Iraq) andOperation Unified Protector Afghanistan
