They continued to merge until 1950 when they separated again into their own organizations. From then on, it was just the shotgun club that united with other rifle clubs to form the NRA (National Rifle Association). Baton Rouge, Louisiana is a city in the US state of Louisiana. The population was 1,640 at the 2010 census. Baton Rouge is a city in the U.S. state of Louisiana. It is the seat of Baton Rouge Parish and was founded on August 20, 1718 by French colonists as a trading post on the Mississippi River. Baton Rouge was named after General James Wilkinson, who had won an engagement against British forces at Fort Duquesne in 1763. The city became an important commercial center during the antebellum period with its own railroad system, which helped make it a major producer of cotton and other agricultural goods. The population grew rapidly during Reconstruction following the American Civil War, reaching more than 120,000 by 1871. In recent decades, Baton Rouge has experienced substantial loss of jobs in manufacturing and other sectors of the economy, making it one of the most economically struggling cities in Louisiana. The earliest evidence for human habitation in what is now Baton Rouge dates to about 12,000 years ago. A site called Moundville was excavated from 9800 BCE to 8500 CE by members of the Clovis culture group. This early community developed on what are now two large hills located within modern-day Baton Rouge City limits: Moundville Hill and Mount Carmel Hill. Both hills were used for burying their dead and may have been ceremonial sites associated with early villages that operated near present-day downtown Baton Rouge. By 1500 CE, contact between Native Americans and European colonists had become increasingly commonplace along the lower Mississippi River due to trade opportunities opened up by Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto's exploration of that region in 1541–45). The city also played an important role in production of aluminum products during this time period. After World War II, Baton Rouge experienced rapid growth thanks to domestic and international businesses such as Standard Oil and Shell Oil who found new markets for their products here.
