The Coast Guard gift history in Baton Rouge, Louisiana began with the establishment of the Baton Rouge Coast Guard on November 10, 1892. The first Coast Guard station was located at WestPort Landing on the Orleans River and served as a landing place for troops stationed in and around Baton Rouge. In 1898, the Coast Guard established a permanent station at EastPort Landing on Lake Pontchartrain. In 1906, the Coast Guard merged with the Army Corps of Engineers to form one unified organization. The name of this new organization was changed to the Marine Corps on February 14, 1907. Through amalgamation and reorganization, various units within the Marine Corps were divided into Commands and Groups which continued to be administered by separate Headquarters staffs until 1946 when all commands were consolidated under one Departmental Headquarters Staff. Since its establishment as a coast guard unit, Baton Rouge's Coast Guardsmen have responded to numerous incidents including Hurricanes Katrina and Rita; Hurricanes Andrew and Helene; Hurricane Ivan; tornado outbreaks in 1996-1998; SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome); floods in 2002-2004; Hurricane Ike; Brazos Bayou firestorm in 2005-2006; both earthquakes struck central Texas in October 2008 . On September 22nd, 2019 an earthquake rocked central Texas killing dozens of people and injuring hundreds more after Boxing Day night

The Coast Guard gift history in Baton Rouge, Louisiana begins with the establishment of the office of the Coast Guard in 1821. The first gifts given to the Coast Guard were embrasures and other pertaining objects. From then until 1924, when Commandant J.H.Gaultier assumed command of the Coast Guard, there was no dedicated gift giving program within the Coast Guard. It was only during Gaultier's tenure that a special fund was established to give away holiday gifts to members of the service. This program continued until 1971 when commandant Cmdr. Wm.Fletcher took over as head of the Coast Guard gift department. During Fletcher's tenure, a new gift program became operational which gave away items such as fishing net weights and rods, hats and sunglasses, cookware and silverware, among others. In 1999-2000, Commandant Jody Dickson implemented a new gift policy which allows for any type of item (not just holiday gifts) to be given as a gift to members of the service who have served since 1987 or earlier. Since her installation as Commandant Dickson's successor in 2003-2004, she has been instrumental in expanding this policy even further by implementing a selection process for awarding grants which allows citizens from throughout Louisiana to submit their ideas for how they would like the Coastal Guard to spend its money on behalf of our state's citizens.
Baton Rouge is a city in the U.S. state of Louisiana, located in the East Baton Rouge Parish district. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 296,405. It is the most populous municipality in East Baton Rouge Parish and one of the largest cities in Louisiana. The city was founded on August 29, 1805 by General James Wilkinson as a military post at an intersection of two rivers where Baton Rouge now stands. The first settler in what is now Baton Rouge was Baptist preacher John Brimley who arrived there on July 3, 1799 with his family from North Carolina. He built a cabin near present-day City Park and named it "Baton Rouge." In 1800 Wilkinson built Fort Neches which served as a military post until 1802 when he moved it to its present site at Boulevard d'Orleans (now Interstate 90) after defeating French forces at Battle of Iberville River Bridge. On November 11, 1803, Wilkinson married Marie de la Salle about whom more later.. By 1830 Baton Rouge had over 100 residents and was home to six churches and three stores; however by 1840 only 34 people lived there and five churches remained. On March 14, 1845 Lafayette's Brigade marched through downtown Baton Rouge to parade for Confederate general Robert Ewell Scott's landing on Red River outside Mobile Bay
