Bastrop is a small town located in Livingston Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bastrop began as an agricultural community and now has a wide variety of businesses and residents that are involved in various aspects of local, state, and national life. The first inhabitants of what is now Bastrop were Native Americans who lived on the banks of the River Bastille near present-day Bastrop High School. The area was settled by white men in 1836 when they founded the city of New Orleans on the site then known as Prairie du Chien. In 1848, a group of Texans led by Stephen Fayette arrived in what is now Bastrop to purchase land from the indigenous people for $1 million dollars. They renamed their new settlement "Bastrop" after General Lafayette's home province of France (now Quebec). In 1853, A&P grocery store owner Charles Hinton donated land to create a town square west of his store for future use as a center for trade and commerce. He named this square "Hinton Square." In 1865, John Sibley set up shop here along with other merchants during what was called the Black Hawk War because he could provide goods that could not be procured from both Illinois and Missouri due to military hostilities over Indian raids into those states. In 1886, American Baptist minister Wm Hickman erected his large wooden church on East Elm Street which served as district headquarters for much of central Louisiana during Reconstruction Periodserved primarily as a religious haven for freedmen and their families until it burned down in 1897 following Hurricane Agnes damage. Freedmen established several small businesses including J C Laughlin & Son grocery store (later First Natchez Grocery Co), F G Pope seed millinery & feed stores (later Pope Seed Company), Harry Smith piano factory (later Sears Piano Factory), Gaston Cotton ginnery & millinery ( later Cotton Ginners' Millinery Syndicate)and Edward Weldon cooperative bakery (& cafe) before being forced out by white supremacists during World War I who believed African Americans were helping Allied forces fight against Germany; these businesses were reopened by black soldiers soon afterward under different names or moved elsewhere after America's entry into World War II blacks resumed their previous economic activity but did not return to political power until after passage of Civil Rights Act in 1964 When Edwin Edwards became governor in 1966; black participation increased with him cutting racial barriers among government officials

Bastrop is a town in the parish of Bastrop, in the state of Louisiana. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Gulf of Mexico about 20 miles northeast of New Orleans. The first Europeans to visit Bastrop were French colonists who built Fort Caroline in 1711. The town was named for General James Robertson, commander of American forces during the American Revolution and governor of Louisiana from 1785 to 1789. A post office was established at Bastrop in 1832, and remained in operation until it closed in 1992. In 1862, Confederate general Robert E. Lee decided to cross the Mississippi River and attack Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant at Baton Rouge instead of advancing through Missouri as planned. He ordered his army to march northwest into Arkansas rather than south via Dallas or Memphis because he believed that these towns would be garrisoned by Union troops and not attacked by Confederate forces (the Battle of Batesville otherwise known as "The Battle Of Arkansas" took place near Fort Smith, Arkansas). However, this decision failed to take into account that Union artillery had destroyed most bridges across the river so that only a small portion of Lee's army could cross without risk; much later historian William Tecumseh Sherman described it as "a suicidal enterprise". Instead, Lee's army came up against heavy resistance and withdrew towards Memphis with little damage done beyond lost equipment and men. In 1865, after Davis' inauguration as president of the United States following Abraham Lincoln's assassination, Congress passed an act authorizing President Andrew Johnson to convene a federal convention to draft a new Constitution for Louisiana which would then be submitted for ratification by both Houses before being ratified nationwide on December 15th; however this plan never came true because Johnson was impeached two months later on February 14th after being found guilty on four counts including obstruction of justice stemming from his relationship with Rosemary Kennedy) Bastrop became oneida County seat when Livingston Parish split off from Jefferson Parish on January 8th 1872 due to court rulings granting voting rights specifically to white landowners over black farmers (the Act providing for this splitting also stated that if any part or all of Jefferson Parish should secede from New Orleans government become effective on September 16th), though it remains currently an open-air jail since July 29th 1909 (#9A prison). On November 3rd 1890 presidential candidate Grover Cleveland visited Bastrop while campaigning in east Texas; he announced his candidacy for president on November 4th but did not visit Bastrop because he had plans elsewhere that day.. On October 21st 1893 local doctor Jesse Loring Packard published an article entitled "Diseases Found In Our Rural Population" which discussed how many residents living within five miles (8 km)of Prairie View A&M University were infected with tuberculosis: 5% +/- 2%. The author hypothesized that many people living near schools were exposed to large numbers (>10%) mosquitoes during their summer vacation periods when school was let out early.. One year earlier another doctor named George Waring had written about how malaria cases are increasing among children living close by swampy areas where waterbird hunting took place: 7% +/- 2%. Despite this information packard's article still went unpublished until years later when finally caught up in a larger project looking into rural diseases at Prairie View A&M University
