The Navy has deployed gift history in Bastrop, Louisiana since the early 1800s. The first military forces in the area were Spanish soldiers who arrived in 1736. The French also fought in and around Bastrop for a period of time before they were driven out by the Spanish. The area was later claimed by the United States during the Mexican-American War. In 1846, American troops moved into Bastrop after defeating Mexico at Palo Alto Bridge. General Zachary Taylor decided to use Bastrop as his winter headquarters and ordered Colonel James Waddell to build him a home here. Waddell erected a large granite mansion on State Street which served as an artillery battery until it was destroyed by Confederate fire in 1865. Two years later, in 1847, Commodore John Farragut sent his flagship USS Constitution through Baton Rouge Bay to blockade Mobile Bay following Admiral Andrew Porter’s successful attempt to capture Pensacola Harbor. When Farragut learned that Spain had built Fort Blanco on San Felipe Island he sailed his ship upriver and anchored off Point Comfort (now downtown Bastrop) where he received word from Secretary of War James Buchanan that “Navy Department is authorized to furnish arms and ammunition for one year only” Farragut then dispatched two boats with men and supplies ashore to reinforce General Worth’s brigade besieging Mobile Castle before returning underway about sunset on July 8thpite heavy gunfire from shore batteries Buchanan offered no explanation but rumors circulated that Commodore Farragut had been insulted by President Polk over strategy issues After long delays (due largely to lack of available transports), USS Constitution finally arrived at New Orleansport on December 10th1848 with 379 guns and 1400 sailors under Lieutenant Commander John Rodgers USS Constitution decommissioned there on March 15th1849 after serving 46 monthsSouth Carolina Governor Ruffin put her into storage at Beaufort Naval Station until she was sold for scrapon May 25th1851 A few weeks later she was towed back downriverto Charleston where she was scrapped .
