Bastrop is a small town in Bastrop Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Bastrop was François Varenne in 1620. He named it "Baton Rouge" after his military victory over the French at the Battle of Baton Rouge (1618). In 1803, General Andrew Jackson stopped by here on his way to New Orleans and reported that he had discovered "a very rich country all around this point". A post office was established here in 1827. In 1839, Lieutenant Colonel James Moore defeated Confederate troops under general Braxton Bragg near here at the Battle of Sabine Pass and cut off their retreat back upriver. This event helped establish Bastrop as an important strategic location for Confederate forces during the Civil War. In 1870, Union General Ulysses S. Grant's army destroyed most of Fort Hindman onshore in what is now Bayou Lafourche about two miles east of where Bastrop now stands. That same year also saw the opening of Texas' first oil well, which led to increased development around Bastrop and other areas in northeast Louisiana through the late 19th century and into the 20th century. A cotton gin was built in Bastrop by John Fitch between 1857 and 1861; it became one of several Ginsengs operated along I-10 between Dallas/Fort Worth and Lafayette before being shuttered in 1961 due to pollution concerns brought about by nearby refineries then still open today The old cotton gin site is still a popular tourist spot with a visitors center featuring exhibits about local history dating back to 1865 when Atticus Finch proprietor Ebenezer Higgins leased it from Jno Hickey .
