Bastrop, Louisiana is a small town located in the parish of Bastrop, Louisiana. The population of Bastrop was 1,541 at the 2010 census. The name "Bastrop" is thought to be derived from the Cajun words "basta" meaning "big house" and "troup" meaning "to trade." The first settler in Bastrop was Samuel French in 1802. He built a cabin on a bluff overlooking the present day town. The first post office in Bastrop was established onDecember 12, 1810 by Captain John Paine with the name of French Post Office. OnMay 5th 1815, Captain Denton erected a log schoolhouse and added two rooms to it for use as a post office. In 1820,Captain John Paine donated land to build a courthouse and court house which were dedicated on November 15th of that year. In 1860, Bastrop had a population of 350 people when it became an incorporated municipality under Napoleon Bonaparte's New Orleans Territory law No LXXXIII known as Act No 9 of 1860. A fire destroyed part of the courthouse in 1865 but was rebuilt with help from local citizens and business owners within six months. It reopened on October 6th 1870 after being certified by then-Governor Andrew Johnson as having met all necessary requirements including insurance ratings pursuant to Article XVI Section 2(a) of Constitution Of Louisiana On May 25th 1893, President Grover Cleveland signed into law An Act entitled "_An act providing for reorganization of Orleans Parish_; making additional appropriations therefor._", which created 11 new municipalities within Orleans Parish: 4 cities (New Iberia; Metairie; Jefferson Davis; Tulane); 3 rural townships (Caddo Mills; Lake Charles ; Terrebonne); 2 parishes (Baton Rouge & Iberville); 1 city limits (New Orleans). Elected officials serving inside municipal boundaries were Mayor James Hogg and Commissioners George Millington and Wm Sells each serving one term only with no re-election provided for commissioners who were not elected at-large like City Council members are today under State Law §24:3-2 through 24:3-4 originally set up by Edwin Edwards following Reconstruction Period when southern aristocracy regained power over former slaves thanks largely to ginned oil money sent their way . After Reconstruction period ended most African Americans left or were replaced by white residents so black commissioners could not do much except serve ceremonial functions during mayor’s absence or when he traveled outside municipal boundaries

However, during World War II Bastrop experienced an epidemic of typhoid fever which killed more than 60% of the population. Today Bastrop is a small town located in Rapides Parish, Louisiana with a population of around 10,000. The history of Bastrop begins withCaptain James K. Bastrop who founded the town on August 15th, 1821 after he and his wife drove out from Texas to find new land to settle. At first bastrop was just a few scattered settlement along the banks of the Red River which later became Bastrop County. Captain Bastrop started trading goods with Native Americans and eventually bought 250 acres (1 km2) in what is now Rapides Parish for $5 per acre ($14 per hectare). In 1825 he married Jane Purdy and their family soon set up home near present day Bastrop on Baptist creek where they farmed until 1830 when they decided to move their establishment to what is now downtown Bastrop to make way for development at that time it was still rural areas mostly farmland. In 1830 Captain James K.Bastarp erected a cotton gin & distillery at present day downtown Bastrop making him one of the earliest settlers in what would become Rapides Parish . By 1840 most all farming had stopped as cotton production increased due to market demand and several plantations were built including: Wirtz’s Plantation; Reily’s plantation; Perkins’ plantation; Slaughter’s plantation; Shipley’s plantation; Harper-Lance Plantation These plantations would continue doing well until around 1900 when prices crashed following American Civil War which destroyed much business opportunity throughout rural America . After Reconstruction ended in 1865 many white people returned home while black people stayed behind primarily working on newly acquired farms or as sharecroppers . Many businesses like JK White Hats & Straw Hat Co., JK Richards Tobacco store, A&W Root Beer restaurant continued operating into the 20th century but gradually declined over time due mainly to competition from national chain stores such as Walmart .
