Bastrop, Louisiana is a small town located in the parish of Bastrop, Louisiana. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It is known for its history and landscape. The town began as a landing spot on the Red River where farmers could disembark their boats to trade goods with upstream traders. Homebuilders started arriving in the 1840s and 1850s and soon built up what is now Bastrop's downtown district. By 1872, there were 10 stores and 2 churches in downtown Bastrop. The first post office opened in 1894. In 1920, Bastrop had 9 banks with $1 million in assetsseighty-eight businesses employing over 200 workers. In 1930, when President Herbert Hoover designated Bastrop as a war vital center due to its strategic location near Mobile Bayou (then Babine Bayou), many residents voted to secede from neighboring Jefferson Parish because they felt that Hoover was favoring Mobile County instead of them. On January 16, 1932, during his second term as president, Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered federal troops into Bastrop after learning that local white leaders were trying to stir up trouble by clashing with local black residents over housing discrimination (which was then still illegal). The Ulysses S Grant Bridge across Babine Bayou was built at this time which linked both sides of the river; however it no longer carries traffic today because of sanitary concerns related to water levels aboveground. During World War II much of Bastrop's manufacturing took place within Army Air Forces airfields such as Dowling Field and Iberia Field; these fields produced everything from tanks and planes to ammunition and cars. After the war ended civilians returned but many factories closed or converted into warehouses while others remain active today including ExxonMobil's refinery which processes oil products from Texas before export to Europe; it employs some 5500 people statewide . Bastrop, Louisiana is a small town in the Parish of Bastrop, La. It was founded by two brothers in 1848 and has been located there since then. The population of Bastrop as of the 2010 census was 3,821. The town is named after General John C. Marshall who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as Mayor of Bastrop from 1865 to 1870. The first settlers to the area were Frenchmen who arrived in 1799 during the Pontiac Expedition under General James Ketchum. They built a small fort on the banks of the Mississippi River opposite present day Bastrop. A few years later, additional French colonists arrived and erected a larger fortification which served as their headquarters for many years. In 1811, Captain Robert Folsom charted what is now Bastrop County on his surveyor’s plat while performing military duty near modern day Baton Rouge. Afterward, various missions were established here including Mission San Antonio de Bexar (established in 1827), Mission Santa Elena de los Padres Magno Ventura (1830), andMission Concepcion (1851). On July 4th, 1848 two brothers named Stephen and Ferdinand Behrendt founded what would become Bastrop with land they had acquired from Captain Robert Folsom following his map survey of that year. At that time it was an unincorporated community located along Ferrand Street about four miles east of present day Bastrop Center shopping district. On October 15th 1861 Stephen Behrendt died suddenly at age 47 while farming near present day Donaldsonville; leaving behind him his wife Anna Maria Behrendt and four children: Johnathan Behrendt (born October 6th 1863), Louisa Behrendt (born November 14th 1865), ClaraBehrensdorf (born December 11th 1867) and Helen Marie Behrensdorf née Weiser (born January 25th 1889). Their only child – AnnaMaria’s brother Johnathan – would die at age 21 months soon after birth due to pneumonia contracted while working on a farm outside New Orleans when he became ill with typhoid fever caused by overwork during the American Civil War efforts against Confederate forces.. AnnaMaria & Johnathan's only daughter Helen Marie did not survive infancy either & so she too grew up without siblings
