It is part of the New Orleans-Metairie-Kenner Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town has been named for James Baker, who served as U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom from 1981 to 1987 and as Secretary of State from 1989 to 1993 under President George H.W. Bush and First Lady Barbara Bush. The first settler in what is now Baker was a man by the name of John Kirby who arrived in 1798 along with his family from England. In 1819 another man named Smith surveyed land in what is now Baker and built a cabin there on May 10th, 1819 which he called "Kirby's Cabin." On July 3rd, 1840 Abraham Lincoln was born in nearby Alexandria, Louisiana while living as a boy with his father John Lincoln (1765-1845) at 15 miles northwest of present day Baker on Farmington Road near what is now Old Ford Road (now US 70). As an adult Abraham Lincoln moved westward along Farmington Road until he reached what is now US 70 where he purchased land west of Interstate 10 on October 20th, 1846 which he donated to the government for use as a public road system within the newly formed Louisiana Territory comprising much of Texas then Mexican territory acquired after Mexico's War of Independence including parts of today's Arkansas and Oklahoma

Baker is a small town located in the parish of Pennington, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge–New Orleans Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was named for Lorenzo Baker, a planter and member of the state constitutional convention in 1837. The first post office in Baker opened in 1852. The community developed around a Baptist church and school district which provided education for children from rural areas near Baton Rouge and New Orleans. A cotton gin was built in 1865 to process cottonseed produced by local farmers. In 1903, an electric Cooperative was organized and began selling electricity to villagers; it remains one of the largest electricity providers in eastern Louisiana today. In 1944, during World War II, Baker became one of eight towns within Vicksburg-Pitkin County that were combined into Jackson Parish; it remained an all-black parish until 1970 when white residents moved into black neighborhoods throughout the area following integration efforts elsewhere in Vicksburg Parish. After Hurricane Katrina struck southern Louisiana on August 29, 2005, parts of Baker were destroyed as well as surrounding communities such as West Monroe and Hammondsport due to flooding caused by storm surge resulting from Hurricane Katrina's landfalling winds over land adjacent to Lake Pontchartrain at 90 mph (145 km/h). As a result of this damage and ensuing federal dollars available for disaster relief under then-president George W Bush's "$15 billion" reconstruction plan,[1] much rebuilding occurred within Baker over time including renovating most homes dating back to before Katrina with government assistance;[2][3] 300 new homes have been constructed or rebuilt since 2005.[4][5] As per 2013 national rankings prepared by Forbes magazine,[6] Baker ranks No. 5 out of 100 U.S.,Louisiana based businesses with annual revenues above $1 million (the top spot goes to Boca Raton).[7] Additionally according to recent data compiled by LLC Research Group Incorporated,[8][9] many small businesses are operated out of single family dwellings rather than larger buildings more common among large companies because they are cheaper and require less management support -clairvoyance readings can be carried out using these dwellings without fear or embarrassment
