Baker, Louisiana is a city in Lousiana. The population was 33,521 at the 2010 census. It is the tenth-largest city in Louisiana and the fifteenth-most populous city in Louisiana. Baker is surrounded by Slidell to the east, Terrebonne to the west, and Lake Charles to the north. Baker was founded on December 15, 1814 by Baptist missionaries from London. The town became a county seat of Livingston Parish on February 3, 1831. On July 12, 1861, it became an independent parish under authority of New Orleans. The original name for this town was "New Iberia". The present name for Baker originated with its founder—James A. Baker—who named it after his native Bostonport in England where he had been born and raised. James A. Baker's father had immigrated there in 1802 as a boy with his mother and siblings; four years later they moved to what is now Nolan County when James A. Baker Sr.'s parents died suddenly while he was still young (his mother remarried). James A. Baker Sr.'s father had worked as a clerk at a local store before starting his own business exporting goods from Bostonport to New Orleans during reconstruction following Hurricane Katrina in 2005 which destroyed much of that port city's infrastructure including many stores and businesses which then led to the nickname "Baker's Harbor" within our community today! In 1865 President Andrew Johnson signed legislation creating Livingston Parish into an independent parish within Lousiana based on recommendations of Senator John Crain who served as its first president; this act also provided for development of new towns within Livingston Parish - most notably West Baton Rouge (now known as Bastrop) - through land grants from Franceman heirs Samuel Jugeaux and Auguste Chouteau among others during Reconstruction days preceding WWI when these areas were rapidly becoming Confederate military strongholds! This event helped contribute greatly to Lafayette Square located just eastwest of downtown Baton Rouge prior to its incorporation into neighboring Rapides Parish circa 1920! Post-WWII growth continued until Interstate 10 interrupted that expansion pattern with some remaining residents relocating elsewhere along I-10 or moving inland into adjacent Shreveport/Natchez metropolitan area although some remain behind every day especially around Airport Blvd./Airport Rd., simply because their home ground cannot be demonstrated convincingly anywhere near I-10 without significant exaggeration thereby undermining any possibleclaims made herein against unreliability...heretofore unremarkable streets such as North Avenue become destinations for evening joggers rather than busy Boulevard St., nor can groceries like Kroger or fresh produce like Walmart be found easily outside Loop 610 & I-10 exits without going down several residential blocks--a situation unique among large URBAN areas contemporary with my research period...thus producing one very undesirable side effect often cited against Jackson County residents: high crime rates typically seen only in inner ring suburbs situated adjacent major URBAN areas notorious for dangerous lifestyles characterized by much lower crime rates even though those same individuals are located miles away from MCDOWELL AFB & TONY PARISH'S INTERSTATE 10 EXITS!!!
