Baker, Louisiana is a small town in south-central Louisiana. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Livingston Parish and was founded in 1825 by Captain John Baker and his wife, Sarah. The town has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen: Cfa), with hot, humid summers and mild to cool winters. Average monthly temperatures range from . January through March are the coolest months with an average temperature of ; during April–June it gets warm but not too hot; July and August are typically quite warm until September when cooler air arrives; October is usually quite coldest; and November is typically the hottest month with an average high of . According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Baker has a subtropical climate that features Coolsummer Mediterranean weather. The main industry in Baker is agriculture, which includes crops such as cotton, corn, soybeans, sugarcane, hayseed sorghum, and rice. There are also several businesses that service the community including a library/library system (Libraries Lafayette Branch) public schools (Grades K-8), churches (Anglican Roman Catholic - Holy Trinity Episcopal Church) which serve as congregations for various religious denominations (Methodist Episcopal - First Baptist Church), manufacturing companies (Cameron Manufacturing Company - died in 2000), retail stores (), two small airports serving local aircraft services (* one serves Air New Orleans * one serves Gulfport Regional Airport *) as well as several golf courses (). Baker originally developed around Captain John Baker's landing on what is now known as Boulevard d'Iberville on January 7th 1825 after outfitting himself with four horses and supplies for his journey across central Louisiana. A post office was established at this location on February 2nd 1826 under the name "Bakerstown." In 1830 captain John baker erected a log cabin where helived until his death in 1840. Five years later another post office was established at present day downtown called "Livingston" after General James Livingston who served under Napoleon Bonaparte during World War I- This post office operated from 1865 to 1870 before being closed due to insufficient mail volume). In 1875 the first white settlers arrived in what would become today's Bakertown when Isaac de la Halle leased land from Captain John Bakers widow Sarah for $50 per year plus expenses incurred travelling by wagon train to bring back goods overland from New Orleans *. In 1880 Mrs de la Halle donated her entire plantation including 400 acres located east of present day downtown to form Acadia Parish *. From this point forward most of what we know about early Bakertown development came from Mrs de la Halle's donation*. By 1890 there were 125 homes built throughout all six Acadia Parishes*(*excluding those built by Mrs de la Halle*) while Garrison Store had been opened in 1895.*(*Garrison Store closed following WWI.) In 1940 Captain Emmett JONES bought 100 acres north of downtown along Highway 264 (*now known as State Road 522*) which would be used for housing up until 1959 when it became part of Municipal Airport Barker *(*Municipal Airport Barker currently operates out of Flynn Field Municipal Airport *) During WWIICaptain Jones operated an airplane dealership out of his home which produced military parts for use by USAAF pilots flying over Europe**(*This airport still operates.) By 1970 there were only 10 homes remaining within Downtown & less than 50 people living within Agricultural District boundaries*(*excluding Garrison Store*) while only 3 businesses remained within Locke parish*. Eventually he joined his father at farming operations semi-trucks carrying produce down country Roadsides between Monessen Township PA./Bellefonte Township PA., Clearfield County PA./Clearfield County PTA., Westmoreland County NJ., Delaware County NY., Licking County KY./and finally here at home finally joining us here today just over three hundred miles southeast of Pittsburgh Ohio! As any good farmer does though “he went about doing things according to plan” developing skills necessary for running such large enterprises starting with seed planting&water harvesting followed soon thereafter by feedlot animal husbandry complete w/manure monitoring& controlled dust etc….All these years later I can vividly remember watching my dad plant potatoes late one evening outside our house using bare hands…..in fact some pretty interesting stories have come down thruthe generations about our old Daddy!!!!! We didn’t really have electricity then either so you could understand how important those early days truly were!!!!!! Baker, Louisiana is a small town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the New Orleans metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Baker were French colonists who arrived during the 17th and 18th centuries. The present-day town was founded in 1812 by James Laughlin and others from Mobile, Alabama as an agricultural community named for Captain John Baker of that city's British militia unit which fought against American forces in the War of 1812. In 1827, Laughlin donated land to form what became Baker's original village square. Baker was platted on May 21, 1830 by surveyor Rufus King with Wm. Hargrave as his engineer. On July 13, 1830 David Downs platted a new town also called Baker just east of present-day downtown Baker on the north bank of the Mississippi River within present day Livingston Parish; it was renamed Livingston after its first mayor (ambassador to France) andLimestone County seat (later Baton Rouge). In 1835, Lt.-Colonel Lewis Cass appointed William Semmes as commissioner of river navigation for Louisiana under General Andrew Jackson's administration; Semmes recommended that Baker be included within Cass' newly created Orleans Territory along with Lafourche and Stroud counties in southern Alabaster parish; however Governor Claiborne refused to give up territory he had already acquired from Spain west of Lake Pontchartrain without compensation. On November 3rd, 1836 (the same year that Thibodaux was founded), Governor Claiborne ordered General Robert Ewell to take over management ofriver navigation operations from Admiral Crawford until such time as satisfactory arrangements could be made for appropriate local officials responsible for both aspects of those operations - a position which would eventually fall into Confederate hands
