Baker, Louisiana is a town located in Webster Parish, Louisiana. The population was 1,544 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest town in Webster Parish and the only one within Orleans Parish. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Baker were French colonists who arrived in 1699. The early settlers were farmers and their families who grew corn, wheat, rice, cotton, tobacco and eggs. In 1803, General Andrew Jackson's army invaded Louisiana and burned down most of the Spanish mission at San Felipe de Avila on the Baton Rouge River near modern-day Baton Rouge. This event marked the beginning of American expansion into Louisiana. In 1811 Alexander Hogg came to Baker with his family from Scotland and established a farmstead on land that now forms part of east side of town. He built a log cabin which still stands today on what is now Fourth Street south of Court Avenue. By 1830 there were over 100 people living in Bakertown – mostly men working as farmers or furriers or cattle dealers. In 1837 Isaac Becker purchased 640 acres from David Dixon for $2 per acre; this area would later become known as Becker's Prairie (Becker's Prairie Today). With a population totaling just under 500 people by 1840 he began to build up his farm with slaves brought over from Africa–the first such slave trade operation in America date back to 1798 when Nicholas Biddle imported African captives to serve as cooks aboard his ship "Natchez". On July 15th 1840 Isaac Becker founded Baker with seven hundred citizens; it was one of five original townships designated by Governor John Adair for development within Orleans Parish based on present day boundaries of Webster parish including those then included within East Baton Rouge County including modern-day Livingston Parish and parts of St Bernard Parish including what are now Ascension Island and Grand Isle island north shore). As early as 1844 he had planted maize crops on some 3 acres southeast corner Of Third Street And Hill Road/Old Uptown Cemetery Site/southwest corner Of First Street/northwest corner Of Second Street & Cemetery Site northeast corner Of Main Street between Third & Fourth Streets & northwest corner Of FifthStreet between Third&Fourth Streets; this site became home to baker’s bakery which continued operations until 1865 when it moved across streets onto current location adjacent Hammond’s grocery store complex Now First Baptist ChurchEast Baldwin Avenue BP LA 70801) In 1861 Lewis Rives erected frame building approximately opposite old bakerer’s house still standing today upon lot formerly occupied by bakery - this structure served as courthouse during local government years starting June 6th1861 until May 14th1865 when it was destroyed by fire
