Baker, Louisiana is a small town located in the southeastern part of the United States. The population was 5,734 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as Baker was first settled by French colonists in c. 1765-1768. The name "Baker" comes from a local stream that empties into Bayou Teche near present day Baton Rouge. In 1803, the Louisiana Territory was organized and Baker became one of its original townships. In 1836, it became an incorporated town when most of what is now eastern Livingston Parish were annexed to Baton Rouge County. During World War II, much of Baker's industrial output went towards making munitions for Allied forces and providing materials for manufacturing plants in nearby Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania and Scranton, Pennsylvania. The war resulted in a significant loss of life in Baker; however, no serious damage occurred as a result of German air raids on the city during that time period. A new shopping mall called The Square opened up in downtown Baker in 2006 which anchored by Sears and JCPenney stores helped revive downtown business after years of decline following Hurricane Katrina

Baker, Louisiana is a small town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population was 2,619 at the 2000 census. It is part of the New Orleans metropolitan area. The town was settled in 1810 by Captain John Baker and his family from Pennsylvania. In 1811, he built a cabin on what is now U.S. 62 and named it "Baker's Cabin." In 1812, he married Deborah Jourdan and they had six children: John (1813-1870), James (1815-1875), Willard (1817-1900), Sarah Jane (1820-1902), Charles Edward Everett (1823-1920). In 1824, Captain Baker donated land to the parish for a school and chapel. That same year, he erected a courthouse with two stories and three rooms on the south side of Main Street. A courthouse/ jail complex was also built including: an armory with 12 cannons; stable buildings for wagons and horses; a bakehouse; blacksmith shop; medical dispensary; storeroom;and two dwellinghouses for male residents only - one on State Road 90 near present day Iberville Road and one near present day White Sulphur Springs Boulevard - which are still standing today as part of the town center Historic District boundary. Captain Baker died in 1870 after long service as captain of the local militia detachment that fought against Confederate forces during the American Civil War efforts to keep New Orleans open to troops under General Robert E Lee while other parts of Louisiana were occupied by Confederate forces. He is buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Baton Rouge where many notable people have been interred including former President Ulysses S Grant who visited there while on a visit to Louisiana in 1865 Captured Union military supplies destined for General Robert E Lee were delivered into Confederate hands at this time so much so that some became known as "the lost supplies". After Reconstruction ended following the war, much ownership change took place with land being available more cheaply within neighboring parishes such as Jefferson Parish which led to increased trade between these areas which caused economic development around towns like Baker over time especially given its location midway between Baton Rouge and New Orleans
