The main industry is agriculture with raising cows, pigs, chickens, pigskinning, soybeans, rice crops and other commodities; manufacturing includes woodworking products and plastics products. Baker, Louisiana is a small town located in Rapides Parish, Louisiana. The population was 9,551 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest parish in Louisiana and the sixth-smallest in the United States. The parish seat is Baton Rouge. The town of Baker was founded by settlers from eastern Massachusetts in 1819. At first it was called Muscatine, but upon its incorporation as a village in 1827, it reverted to its original name of Baker. The community grew rapidly during the 1830s when sugarcane became an important crop on the local landscape. By 1840, Baker had a school and three churches; one Baptist and two Methodist. In 1846, Baker elected its first mayor—a role that continued until 1903. In 1857, John Aiken bought 4 acres of land east of town and built what would later become known as Aiken's plantation near present day Baton Rouge; this would become his primary residence for many years. In 1865 Captain James Fenton purchased 100 acres west of town and began developing what became known as Fenton's Plantation; this property would be used for agricultural purposes until 1970. In 1899–1900 The Orleans Parish Railroad established a line from New Orleans to Baton Rouge through downtown Baker; this line would eventually be replaced by Interstate 10%. In 1916–17 An Act were passed which provided for annexation of adjacent parishes including Rapides into Baker; this annexation occurred on February 17th, 1917 under then Governor Alfred Peculiar Jr.. Afterward much development took place with new homes being built on acreage annexed such as that now occupied by Aiken's plantation just east of town center across from Acadiana Hospital (now University Hospital). This process led to increased population density in what is today central-west Baton Rouge with streetlights being added throughout the area adding an element of realism to life thereabouts still more than 50 years after incorporation! On October 1st 1870 Myron Wightman set out north along I-10 towards Lafayette following same route he had followed when prospecting for oil fields south of Lake Charles back in 1901 while working at Sulphur Hill Refining Companyowned by J C Caldwellon & Co.; Caldwellon becoming sole owner & operator thereof some time thereafter prior thereto notwithstanding Realty actMarriage license dated Dec 6 1890 between Myron Wightman & Nancie E Higginsboth natives or citizens Of Rapides Parish married Dec 5 1889 thereby creating record For first marriage ever performed In Rapides Parish Also note No address given so may have been listed elsewhere earlier

They started a small grocery store on the current site of the town in 1892. The townspeople built their first permanent home around 1925 and incorporation as Baker was granted to them by the Louisiana legislature on November 3, 1925.
