Baker, Louisiana is a town located in Acadia Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 2,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge–New Orleans–Shreveport metropolitan area. The name of Baker comes from a small creek that ran through the town. pioneer farmers there named it "Baker's Crossing" because of the crossing of the creek by the old road leading into Acadia Parish. In 1814, General James K. Polk journeyed through Baker and its neighbor Rusk during his famous "The Polk Doctrine" speech which signified American support for Mexican independence efforts against Spain. In 1918, Baker was designated as the site for an airfield to be built by World War I veteran Colonel Edward “Dutch” Lindbergh in order to provide planes for military operations in Europe; however, construction never began due to financial difficulties faced by Lindbergh and his associates. In 1941 Baker became home to one of two airfields used by both Nazi Germany and Japan during World War II: Anderson Air Force Base (now known as Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson) and Eglin Air Force Base (now known as Eglin Air Force Base). After Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans on August 29th 2005 while much of central Louisiana was still under water from Hurricane Rita a few days earlier, many people fled what they thought would be their last hope for safety: Baton Rouge. Many people who had left were not sure if they were going back or not but eventually decided to stay put because they did not want their families or homes looted or destroyed again after such a devastating event like Katrina had done before her. An estimated 100% lossof life occurred within six hours following landfall - between dead animals and homeless individuals found stranded on rooftops or on streets - making it one of worst natural disasters in US history with over 1 million fatalities globally since 1900 according to research done by FEMA’s National Preparedness Directorate Disaster Recovery Center (NPDRC). With more than $160 billion dollars worth of damage reported throughout New Orleans alone including levee failures and flooding caused by Rita combined with aerial imagery taken just prior to landfall shows that storm surge caused almost all housing losses ($60 billion), business losses ($30 billion), personal property losses($20 billion) along with total economic damages amounting to $360 billion cumulatively across Greater New Orleans region after Katrina
Baker, Louisiana was established in 1836 and named for James C. Baker, a politician who served as the U.S. Senator from Louisiana from 1835 to 1841 and as Secretary of War under President Andrew Jackson. The town was originally located in Jefferson County, but it was moved to Webster Parish in 1840 because of theualahing population growth in that area caused by the opening of the Mississippi River floodplain. In 1849, Baker incorporated as a city and became one of the most important commercial centers in southeastern Louisiana.
