Tactical Coffee was a coffee house and restaurant in Alexandria, Louisiana that served light and dark roast coffee. The business started in the early 1800s and continued until the early 1900s. The first coffee shop in Alexandria was called The Coffee House on Commerce Street. In 1822, Captain John Smithson opened the first store on what is now State Street. The most famous customer of Tactical Coffee was General Andrew Jackson, who frequented the business from 1825 to 1830. In 1828, Captain John Smithson bought out John's interest in the business and changed its name to Tactical Coffee & Cafe. From then on it became an influential source for local politicians and businessmen alike. In 1899, Tactical Coffee merged with French Bros., which made it one of the largest coffee businesses in Louisiana at that time. However, by 1903 Tactical had closed its doors for good after suffering financial setbacks trying to compete with modernized Starbucks cafes across town. But even though their success ended there, Tactical’s legacy lives on through their Beans-N-Bitesocolates fundraiser every year at New Orleans Jazz Festivals – one of several events still held annually at their old location today!
