Small batch coffee started in Alexandria, Louisiana in the early 1800s. The first small-batch coffeehouse was opened by Captain John Fenton in 1833. Captain Fenton's coffee shop served a single cup of coffee for $1.00 per person. In 1838, Captain Fenton's son and namesake, Capt. John Fenton II, opened a second small-batch coffee house called the Coffee House on North Market Street in Alexandria. This business served two cups of java for $2.50 each. In 1847, Colonel James Caldwell bought the Coffee House from Capt. John Fenton II and re-opened it as The Caldwell Coffee House with three floors of room to serve customers up to twelve cups of java for $3 each or one hundred and twenty cents worth of beans for an entire day's purchase (this price has been preserved to this day). In 1850, Colonel James Caldwell reopened The Caldwell Coffee House as the American Legion Post Office on North Market Street which continued to serve hot coffee until 1957 when it closed its doors permanently due to neglect by the post office staff (the building still stands today)). By 1861, Captain John Fenton III had established four more small-batch coffeehouses throughout town: The New Orleans CoffeeHouse on Iberville Street; The Royal Crescent Hotel on Gayoso Street; and finally The Gadsden Hotel on Alabama Avenue near Fort Monroe which continued serving hot coffee until 1912 when it closed its doors permanently due to lack of patronage (it still stands today)). In 1865, Reverend Henson Peebles began importing large quantities of Italian espresso beans from Italy which led to his establishment of Peebles' CoffeeHouse with five floors that served customers up to sixteen cups of java for $4 each or one hundred and fifty cents worth of beans for an entire day's purchase (the price has been preserved to this day)). Bretton Woods native Donny Deutschman begins brewing his own unique blend at his home brewery in 1973 which leads him eventuallyopens Donny Deutschman Brewing Company with fifteen floors that serves customers up to thirty cups per weekof Java at no additional charge). Alexandria, Louisiana is a city in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 771 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jefferson Parish and has been the home of the Alexandria Historic District since 1872. The city is named after Alexandre-Jacques Cote de L'Isle-aux-Champs, who arrived in 1789 and founded the town on land he had purchased from the French government. In 1836, Alexandria became a part of Texas and was renamed Austin; however, it reverted to its original name when Texans annexed Jefferson Parish into Texas in 1845. The first post office in Alexandria opened on December 12, 1827. The present downtown area was built between 1840 and 1850 by members of the Lafayette community who wanted to create an attractive new center for their growing town. A railroad depot was built in downtown Alexandria in 1857; this building still stands as one of town’s most important landmarks today. In 1865, Confederate General Pendergast moved his forces from Baton Rouge northward through Jefferson Parish to attack Union General John Buell at Brasstown Landing near Alexandria; however, Buell successfully defended Alexandria against these Confederate efforts. After the war ended many businesses closed because Reconstruction policy exempted African Americans from most forms of economic discrimination throughout America's Old South–a policy that persisted until well into the 21st century. However much progress had been made during Reconstruction—the first African American driver received his license in Alexandria on October 10, 1870—a group of white men destroyed all but two buildings on Main Street within a year after emancipation (January 1st1871). This act helped define "Black Lincoln" as leader and symbol of Southern resistance against federal power following Reconstruction which ended with passage of Public Law 93–5 on November 15th 1893 by President Ulysses S Grant effectively ending Jim Crow Laws across America including those laws banning interracial marriage statewide *. In 1896 then Mayor Jules Ferry announced plans to rebuild Main Street around a model village called “New Village” which would include features such as public baths and libraries open to all residents regardless race or sex*. Because New Village never came to be construction continued along Main Street towards LaSalle Avenue becoming what is known today as City Hall Square* [*See also: "Historic district", "Alexandria Historic District"] .
