Coffee has a long and varied history in Alexandria, Louisiana. There are references to coffee from as early as the 18th century. However, it is not until the late 19th century that coffee begins to be widely consumed and enjoyed by residents of this city. The first recorded purchase of coffee in Alexandria was made by John Gabriel, Jr., on November 3, 1826. Gabriel was a speculator and grocery store owner who had moved from Boston to Alexandria in 1825. He purchased two sacks of French roast beans from Nicholas-Jacques Leduc, a Frenchman living in Mobile, Alabama. Gabriel's purchase marked the beginning of what would become an extensive commercial relationship between Alexandria and France. The next year, Gabriel sold his business to John Auldridge for $2,000 cash; this transaction marks the first time that Alexandrians bought goods or services from foreigners. In 1830, Alexander Robertson founded the Robertson Coffee House on Market Street; at this location he served both local customers and visitors from nearby Mobile Bayou with his unique blend of French roast beans (now known as "Robertson Coffee"). In 1835–36 he also built one of the first extant brick warehouses in America for storing coffee beans (now known as First National Coffee Warehouse). In 1840–41 Elijah Robinson opened The Gilded Cage on Broad Street in downtown Alexandria; here he offered high quality Turkish coffee at an affordable price points for local residents and visitors alike. By 1850s most adults living within five blocks of downtown were familiar with eitherRobertson Coffee or Gilded Cage Coffee House because of their multiple exposure to these establishments during their day-to-day lives. In 1865 Captain Fenton McCormick established McCormick's Café on Second Street near Third Avenue; this establishment became nationally well-known for its fresh brewed coffees which reached consumers all across America through Captain McCormick's retail operation alone (now known as Starbucks). In World War II service at Alexandria Air Base were: Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress 41st Bombardment Squadron "Strawberry Berries" 9th Bomb Wing; Douglas P-38 Lightning 38th Fighter Squadron "Lilacs"; Lockheed P-38E Lightning 44th Fighter Squadron "Citrus Beaches"); Republic F4U Corsair 4th Fighter Squadron "Pineapple Express". After the war ended American troops withdrew from Alexandria but remains an important airport servicing local airlines with flights into Shreveport – Grand Isle - New Iberia – Lake Providence - West Monroe - Monroe
