Navy gifts have been a part of the Abbeville community for centuries. The first navy gift was given in 1861 by Commodore John D. Sloat, Jr., during the American Civil War. This gift was a set of cannons that were used to protect the town of Abbeville from Confederate attack. At various times, different organizations have given gifts to the Navy, including in 2006 when USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-71) visited Abbeville and presented a Museum Restoration Grant to the Parish of St. John Catholic Church. In 2013, USS George Washington (CVN-73) stopped at Abbeville and donated 950 containers of shipbuilding supplies to local businesses in support of Naval Sea Systems Command’s Shipbuilding Training Assistance program. Finally, on December 8th, 2014, USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-81) made an appearance in Abbeville as part of their “Ship Week” event which included tours of local shipyards and presentations from naval officers from around the world. The ship was decommissioned on September 20, 1945, and sold to the French navy as a destroyer corvette La République.
Abbeville is a town in Livingston Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous parish in Louisiana after Orleans. The parish seat and largest city are Abbeville. The land that now makes up Abbeville was first settled by Acadians from Nova Scotia in 1718. They named their community "Acadie." By 1778, all of Acadie had been evacuated to what is now Quebec due to the French and Indian War (1759-63). The British landed troops at Acadie on September 13, 1778, under Rear Admiral John Rodgers and burned the town down after taking only a few prisoners. After the war ended in 1783, Acadia's remaining inhabitants were allowed back into Canada and began to rebuild their homes there. In 1804 they voted to move their school district southward and name it Livingston Parish after General James Wilkinson who helped drive them out of Acadie. In 1835 a group of wealthy planters donated 60 acres (24 hectares) of land just north of present-day Abbeville for educational purposes only; this became known as Wilkinson Lakefront School District No. 1%. The area around today's downtown was mostly rural until about 1940 when several small businesses opened up on Wilkinson Boulevard which ran through present day downtown before turning east onto Airport Road near Central Park Mall. One such business was Sams Shoes which still operates from its original location on Wilkinson Boulevard across from Central Park Mall today. The post office was established at Abbeville on October 12, 1837 by Order of Governor John Adair with Joseph Nunn as Postmaster General; both men would serve two terms consecutively until Abel Jourdain took over on December 1st 1842 due to Adair's death suddenly prior to his inauguration date set for December 3rd (Jourdain would serve one term). On November 15th 1861 First Lieutenant Alfred Aikenham arrived with Company K Confederate Army during the American Civil War at Magnolia Bluff northeast ofpresent day Abbeville where he built an artillery battery called Battery Aikenham which served Confederate forces throughout much of that conflict including Siege Of Vicksburg (April 9-May 4 1865).

It cost £4,500 and was christened HMS Dolphin by Queen Victoria herself. 2) Victory Medal – This medal is named after Admiral Arthur funnell who won the battle of Trafalgar with his fleet on 22nd October 1805 when he led an Anglo-Spanish force against Napolean Bonaparte’s forces. He became Commander-in-Chief of the English Fleet on 1st January 1800 and this made him one of only three people ever to hold that rank simultaneously (the other two were Wellington and Beatty). Admiral Sir John Fisher also received this medal for his part in the Battle of Jutland on 19th May 1915 which resulted in victory for Britain over Germany under Kaiser Wilhelm II). 3) King George V Coronation Medal – This medal is awarded to members of the British government who have been involved in any activity or event related to reigning Monarch within twelve months since their coronation (this includes holders of both Commonwealth realms including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa etc.). The date can be found on either side of the ribbon around the edge of the medal itself (i.e., left-handed monarchs generally have their ribbon facing downwards while right-handed ones have theirs facing upwards). 4) World War I Victory Medal – This medal is awardedto those members of Britian who fought during World War I from 1914 onwards (it does not include soldiers from neutral countries such as Austria or Russia). As with all war medals, there is a separate riband for eachServices branch represented with different colors along one edge - white for Infantry/Airborne/Naval troops blue for Artillery/Heavy Machine Gunners red for Signals & Telecommunications troops yellow for Tank Regiment personnel black for Engineers & Military Troops brown for Army contingent personnel). 5) Korean War Service Medal – This medal is awarded posthumously to military personnel who served between 1951 and 1953 during conflict between North Korea and South Korea known as ‘the Korean Conflict’. The award process begins with nomination by an individual soldier’s family or widow or widower living overseas then consideration by relevant authorities before presentation to Defence Secretary Lord Elwyn Lloyd at Buckingham Palace if appropriate
