Military gift history in Abbeville, Louisiana began with the American Revolution. Colonel John Biddle founded the city of Abbeville in 1795 after moving from Augusta, Georgia. The town was named for General James Wilkinson, who had been killed in a duel near Abbeville. Biddle developed a successful mercantile business and also served as a delegate to the Louisiana state legislature. In 1812, he purchased the land that now makes up downtown Abbeville from the government of Louisiana. He made it his home until his death in 1836. The first military arms were not brought into use until the mid-19th century when cannons were introduced into service by General Andrew Jackson during his campaigns against Native Americans in Tennessee and Mississippi. By 1821, however, artillery had become an integral part of U.S. Army forces and was soon being used to suppress Indian resistance throughout Louisiana and Texas. When Commodore Perry arrived at Mobile Bay on December 7,1818 with his fleet of warships bearing gifts for King Louis XVIII of France, French residents saw this as their opportunity to gain favor with Washington by demonstrating their support for America's war effort against Napoleon Bonaparte and Spain On December 12th 1835 Commodore David Dixon Porter led 5 ships into Mobile Bay carrying over 1 million pounds of firearms including rifles, pistols and cannons intended for Spanish units fighting under Admiral Don Felipe de la Orden y Fuentes on shore duty off Pensacola Beach Florida During World War II local businesses donated items such as radios, vehicles or tools to help those who needed them most during wartime shortages caused by national rationing

The Military Gift History Museum is a nonprofit educational institution that preserves and promotes the history of military gifts. It was founded in 1978 by retired U.S. Marine Colonel Ted Post and his wife, Linda, as an effort to promote understanding among servicemen and their families about the important role that gift giving has played in the history of the United States Armed Forces. Since its inception, MGFHM has hosted more than 350 events which have included presentations by members of Congress, generals, admirals, generals' wives, military historians and others interested in military gift history. The museum also publishes a quarterly journal entitled "Military Gifting: History In Focus." In 1987, MGFHM purchased the former home of Major General Leonard Wheeler on Sun City Circle in Miami Gardens from his widow Elisabeth Wheeler. TheGeneral had donated it to MGFHM in memory of his son Neil who had served with distinction during Desert Storm. As part of their donation program for Hurricane Irma victims, General Wheeler's wife sent many items - including furniture and paintings - to MGFHM's headquarters located inside Fort Lauderdale's JetBlue Airport hangar where they were displayed for all to see. On September 11th 2001 terrorists attacked New York City prompting President George W Bush to issue Executive Order 13466 which prohibited any Governmental Entity from providing assistance or support to any terrorist group or network within thirty days based on information received from appropriate law enforcement agencies (i.e., counterterrorism investigations). This order applied specifically to donations made through charitable organizations such as MGFHM. As a result, almost all military gifts given through Charitable Organizations were either withheld or banned from being given away by our Government until after 9/11/2001 when EO 13466 was rescinded effective immediately pursuant to Presidential directive number 13748-01 dated 10/24/2001 issued by then Secretary Donald Rumsfeld pursuant to Department Orders 646 (2002), 647 (2002), 6508-01 (2002) and 6610-02 (2003). Abbeville is a small town in the parish of Iberia, Louisiana, United States. The population was 4,569 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1802 by Father Jacques Marquette and Father Gabriel Richard as the mission settlement for St. Joseph's Indian Mission. The name comes from Notre Dame de la Garde Abbeville, which refers to an apocryphal story in which a group of French missionaries were asked to build a chapel on top of an old fortification in order to keep enemy scouts out. Although they failed to erect the chapel, they later built a convent and school there. In 1857, while Napoleon III was still Emperor of France, he decided to move his capital from Paris to Metz because he felt it would be more practical and convenient for him to live outside of France. He chose Abbeville as his new capital because it had been abandoned by Parisians after the fall of that city in 1814 and its residents were sympathetic with Napoleon's cause. In 1863-4, during Reconstruction following the American Civil War, Abbeville became known as "the most Negro town in America" because black people made up over 90% of its population at that time. The first post office opened in Abbeville on November 1, 1856; it continued serving until 1907 when it was moved to Prairie du Rocher near Baton Rouge. The first store was operated by John Aiken & Bros., located on Main Street between First and Second Streets; it closed around 1911 due to changing tastes among local customers who preferred shopping at nearby Baton Rouge stores instead. In 1865-6 antebellum African Americans working for white men found themselves competing against each other for jobs such as picking cotton or repairing machine guns while their masters slept away their days; this led eventually to race riots which took place throughout Louisiana during that period termed "Black Tom" raids or "White Raids." These attacks typically occurred when white men were hunting down black criminals or whiskey smugglers who had looted supplies sent into Mobile Bay under sail by General James Kenedy (1816-1879), governor of Alabama since 1861 and an advocate for racial integration within the Confederate army while also seeking control over all southern blacks along with Native Americans via treaties negotiated with those tribes through Ulysses S Grant (1822-1885).
