Abbeville, Louisiana is a town in Livingston Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 2,586 at the 2010 census. The Abbeville-Bossier City Micropolitan Statistical Area has a total population of 6,836. The earliest known inhabitants of what is now Abbeville were the Caddo people who built their village on an island in the Abbeville River. They called it "Kiowa" because they had seen Kiowa warriors riding through the area on horseback and hunting deer and other animals. In 1803, General Andrew Jackson and his army destroyed the Caddoan village and took all of its occupants prisoner. In 1804, General Claiborne Marshall moved his army from New Orleans to become commander of all Louisiana forces. He ordered Marshal's Deputy Sheriff James Fenton to build a fort at Kiowa Point on an island in the river near present-day Lafayette (Lafayette Parish). The fort was named for Samuel French Fénelon, Comte de la Falaise (1763–1837), one of Napoleon Bonaparte's generals during the Napoleonic Wars. It served as Headquarters for many months before being abandoned in 1809 after Confederate forces burned it down. In 1810s two separate settlements were established by white men near present-day Abbeville: Red Bank Landing on an uninhabited deltaplain east of town and White Sulphur Springs about due south on navigation channel between Lafayette and St Tammany parishes which became known as "the Blackwater." Both settlements failed because there were no good crops or water availability nearby for farming purposes; moreover Negroes working on farms there didn't mix with white settlers very well so they quickly left too. A group of high school students from Iberia Parish decided to settle themselves around Red Bank Landing in 1845 after hearing that land grants had been made available there by US President James Kenedyck Jr.. They named their settlement after Saint Vincent de Paul who had died in 1830 while preaching missions among Native Americans near Mobile Bayou Plantation outside New Orleans. Hoped for success but having no permanent residents until 1850 when Father Étienne Dorion arrived with his mission order from Quebec City founded Dominicans apostolic church at Red Bank Landing which soon grew into one of largest Catholic communities west of Mexico City... By 1860 over 100 families lived there including 26 priests... Father Dorion did much to help spread Catholicism throughout Lafourche Parish by founding numerous schools and churches... When he died suddenly at age 70 in 1865 he had helped establish more than 1/3rdthousand Catholics living Religionly Throughout Lafourche County
