This action led to over 204 fatalities among both Confederate soldiers and civilians when Union forces burned down plantations nearAbbeville during Operation Crossroads on November 3rd 1865 (the same day that Abraham Lincoln was shot). On December 12th 1865 local citizens rose up against Confederate authorities leading to an armed uprising known as "The Battle for Abbeville".
