Abbeville is a city in the southeastern corner of Louisiana, United States. The population was 51,839 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in both Jefferson and Orleans counties. The name "Abbeville" comes from the French word "abbaye", meaning monastery. The first European settler in what is now Abbeville was François de la Fayette, who arrived in 1789. He founded a mission here and named it after himself, François-de-la-Fayette Manor. A few years later, on July 4, 1800, Father Jacques Marquette arrived with his group of missionaries to found an Indian village nearby on the banks of the Mississippi River called Prairie du Chien (Prairie of Sticks). After two weeks' travel through dense forests that were home to many large animals such as deer and bears, they reached Prairie du Chien on July 10th. From there they walked for days until reaching a small stream which led them to this place now known as Abbeville. In 1803 Napoleon Bonaparte divided Louisiana into two parts based on their racial composition: New Orleans went to Spain while Abbeville went to France. Lafayette bought most of what are now Jefferson and Orleans counties from France for $10 million dollars in 1806 so that he could create a state called Louisiana Territory which would include all present day Alabama and Mississippi as well as all but 1/5 of present day Texas

The town was named after Father Pierre-Jacques Abbe, a French priest who had been sent to Louisiana in 1799 to help settle the continent. The first settler in Abbeville was Nicholas Hennepin, who arrived in 1802. In 1804, Captain John Jacob Astor founded the Astor House on what is now State Street in town. The town experienced its heyday during the American Civil War and Reconstruction era. For many years it was one of the most important commercial and transportation hubs on the Mississippi River system. In 1865, General Ulysses S. Grant ordered all troops from Louisiana withdrawn and moved back across the river to Red River Parish outside of Lafayette. As a result of this decision, much of downtownAbbeville were destroyed or damaged by Union forces while other parts survived relatively unscathed. In recent years,Abbeville has seen some growth as a bedroom community for Baton Rouge and other major metropolitan areas within Louisiana. However, its historic district remains an important part of its cultural heritage and community life today.

The town began as a small trading post and grew over time into a major port and commercial center in the area. In 1825, Abbeville was named the capital of Louisiana after Spain moved its capital from Mexico City to that city. The town continued to grow and become an important cultural and political center in both the state of Louisiana and in the American Southwest.
