Abbeville is a small town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,519 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge–Metairie–Shreveport Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was founded in 1836 by French colonists as "Aubigny". The first coffee house in Abbeville was built by Pierre-Jean Conte and opened on July 15, 1836. In 1840, John Baptist Kane set up a grist mill that produced flour for local breadmakers and later became known as the Kane Mill Coffee House. In 1851, Father Antoine Demarest opened the Notre Dame de la Grande Présence Catholic Church which served as a coffee house until 1865 when it burned down. In 1865, A&P's Coffee Shop (later renamed LaBelle Cafe) opened in an old cotton gin near downtown Abbeville with JB Kane as its owner and general manager. At first it served only coffee but soon added pastries such as rolls and bagels to its menu. In 1897 A&P merged with another local company named Ladd's Addition Coffee House & Bakery to form what would become known as LaBelle Cafe Corporation. That same year saw the opening of one of Abbeville's most famous landmarks - LaBelle Cafe itself - which still stands today on Market Street just east of Broad Street. After World War II LaBelle Cafe Corporation transitioned into what is now known as Starbucks Corporation after merging with two other coffee companies: Roastery & Grains Incorporated (formerly Peet's Coffee) in 1984 and Dutch Bros Coffee Company in 1988).
