The town was founded by French colonists in 1718 as "Aubigny". It was named for Pierre-André Abbe, a missionary to the French colony of Louisiana. In 1821, the name of the town was changed to "Abbeville" in honor of General James Longstreet, who had fought with distinction in the Mexican War and had been selected as Commander-in-Chief of American forces in that conflict. The first post office opened in 1827 and continued operation until it closed on November 3, 1865. During World War II, Abbeville became an important aluminum production center due to its location near Aluminum Works No. 7 on I-10 just south of Baton Rouge. Abbeville is a small town in the parish of West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. The first European settlers in what is now Abbeville were Frenchmen who arrived in 1716. They founded a mission called La Croix de la Nouvelle-Angoulême (the Cross of New Orleans). The first Englishman to arrive in Louisiana was James Davenport, who came from Connecticut on December 12, 1765. He named his new land "Alaska." In 1802, the Treaty of Paris ended the War of 1812 and brought peace to America. As part of this treaty, Great Britain ceded all of Louisiana to the United States. The area that is now Abbeville became part of the newly formed parish of West Baton Rouge Parish. The town charter was granted on March 2, 1827 by Joseph Broussard Jr., an early settler and founder of Abbeville. The original name for the town was Indianola (a corruption of Iberia). In 1830, it changed its name again to Prairie du Chien (Prairie du Chien being thenFrench for "Far Western Prairie"). In 1840, a post office called Prairie du Chien was established; it had been moved from Thibodaux some time earlier. The town's incorporation as a village occurred on November 10th following a special election held to commemorate the occasion. On December 15th 1890 it received its current name –Abbeville after Father Pierre-André Abbé de l'Aumône who had served as Rector and Chaplain at St John's College Preparatory School from 1869 until his death in 1895. It has since lost much territory due to farming efforts but still retains some characteristics which make it unique such as its narrow streets and high water table that makes wells difficult to find even today

Following Hurricane Katrina, Abbeville was one of the hardest hit areas in Louisiana.
