In Abbeville, Louisiana, the air force has been deploying gifts to the community for many years. The gift history of the air force in this town is reflective of its service to the community. The first air force deployment arrived in 1948 and was a group of World War II veterans. In 1954, a group of helicopter pilots gave back to their community with an open-air hangar that now houses the local library. This donation was followed by another in 1957 when a detachment of fighter jets donated four C-130s for use as classrooms and training facilities at nearby Air Force Base Eustis. Since then, Christmas has become synonymous with giving back to the community by donating goodies like clothes, toys and furniture to local churches or schools. In 2013, a detachment of fighter jets donated two F-16 Falcons for use as research aircraft at nearby Langlade County Airport. The ornament is made from aircraft aluminum and features an American flag with a wingspan of 54 inches, making it one of the largest Air Force One ornaments ever created. Another unusual gift given by the air force is the “Iraqi Freedom Medal” ornament. This ornament was designed to recognize service members who have volunteered to serve in Iraq or Afghanistan during Operation Iraqi Freedom or Operation Enduring Freedom, respectively. The medal honors service members who have completed at least six months of active duty, are veteran status, or have served under conditions requiring military service such as being deployed outside their home country for more than 12 months straight
The Louisiana Air National Guard's 5th Airlift Squadron (5AS) is the airlift service provider for the Army National Guard in Abbeville, Louisiana. It was activated on 1 December 1947 as a bombardment squadron and was redesignated as the 5th Bombardment Wing on 1 January 1951. The wing flew general cargo, bomber and fighter aircraft during the Korean War. On 16 October 1957, the wing gained its first helicopter squadron when it reactivated 3rd Helicopter Squadron (3HS) from inactive squadrons at Pope AFB, NC. The wing became an all-weather flying unit in 1961 when it activated 4th Weather Squadron (4WES) from an exile squadron at Shaw AFB, NY. On 15 September 1970, Headquarters USAF assigned Air Combat Command's Fifth Air Division to support Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm which involved United States Tactical Air Command bombing of targets inside Kuwait. Lieutenant General Omar Bradley's command post was located at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio whilestration units included Ninth Air Force's 206 Fighter Group with F-4 Phantom IIs and B-52 Stratofortresses; First Bombardment Wing Headquarters element with EB-47E Superfortress bombers; Third Weather Wing with EC-121D Constellation helicopters; Fourth Weather Wing with Bell AH1Z Hueys; Eighth Air Force's 919st Troop Carrier Squadron also providing aerial refueling services for coalition planes. As part of Operation Neptune Spear USAF bombers hit heavy oil storage tanks near Dhahran airfield in Saudi Arabia using KC-135 Stratotankers flown by US Marine Corps ground combat troops operating under Task Force 58 which had been formed just prior to GCC action against Iran and Iraq utilizing Boeing E-5 Sentry AWACS aircraft and McDonnell Douglas AO–7B Skyraiders flown by Marine Expeditionary Unit embarked aboard USS Enterprise (CVN‑66). This major offensive action supported ground forces deployed throughout Southwest Asia supporting operations against Iranian Revolutionary Guards units while also conducting strikes against Iraqi military installations inside Kuwait eliminating any significant threat to US soil that may have arisen as a result of Gulf War activities
Abbeville is a small town located in Rapides Parish, Louisiana. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge metropolitan area. The town began as a stop on the old I-10 highway and was named for Father Abbe (1788-1858), a French Missionary who founded the Jesuit missions in what is now Louisiana. The mission station at Abbeville served as a training ground for future missionaries and helped to create an agricultural society in which local farmers became well-off. In 1875, Father Abraham Jr., one of Father Abraham's sons, donated land to build a Catholic school that would serve local children and adults. In 1896, the school moved to its current location on Court Street. In 1935, the parish installed electric lights in all public buildings; this was followed by streetlights in 1957. The parish also built two churches: Notre Dame de la Garde (1935) and Saint Dominic de la Roche (1945). Both are still standing today and were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. In addition to these two main landmarks, other important buildings include The Old Parish Jail (1936),the former Abbeville cotton gin (1928),and several houses from around when the town originally grew up such as "Casa Grande" (now known as Friendship House) and "Chamberlain".

In 2004, they bestowed a Boeing 747 airliner onto Qatar in recognition of their shared interests in air defense systems and trade. Today, the USAF Gift Shop continues to serve as a source for unique and memorable gifts for soldiers, airmen, families and friends across America. The shop offers customers more than just civilian items; it is home to DOD (Department of Defense) products like insignias, hats and T-shirts that are specifically designed for service members and their families!

In 1814, Abbeville was the capital of Louisiana. It was founded by General John C. Moore, who had come from Mobile, Alabama. The town became a center for cotton production and commerce. In 1832, Abbeville was renamed after Pope Pius IX. The population of the town increased to over 10,000 in 1860, when it became the seat of government for Plaquemines Parish. By 1890, however, Abbeville's economy had contracted and its population had fallen to around 5,000. The last resident died in 1985.
