The navy has a long and successful history in St. Matthews, Kentucky. The city is home to the Naval Air Station Lexington, which was founded in 1909 as the first naval air station in the United States. The navy also operates two other naval air stations- Naval Air Station Mayport and Naval Air Station Whitley Bay. The current base of operations for the navy is at Naval Air Station Lexington. In 1898, the United States Congress passed an act providing for a squadron of warships to be stationed at Louisville, Kentucky. This squadron was known as Squadron Vereeniging and it patrolled waters off of Jefferson County and on behalf of US Ambassador John Slidell duringthe Spanish–American War. In 1906, USS Constitution (warship) was commissioned into service with Squadron Vereeniging and served until World War I began. The town of St. Matthews, Kentucky was founded by the Scots-Irish in 1785. The town quickly became a center for Scotch-Irish culture and commerce. The Creek Indians made frequent raids into the area, so the Scots-Irish built numerous Fortifications to protect their settlements. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson marched on St. Matthews with an army to attack the Indian villages in what is now West Tennessee. When he arrived at the village of McKeegee, he found that all of the men had beendriven away by Creek Indians who had learned of his presence. Jackson ordered his troops to retire and burned all of the buildings in McKeegee before withdrawing back into Tennessee. Aftermath of Battle of Horseshoe Bend In 1815, General James Kountz moved his forces against the Cherokee Nation after they attacked a group of settlers near Lookout Mountain outside Lexington, Kentucky. Kountz's force numbered over 30 thousand men and women and two cannons but were met with fierce resistance from Chief Osage's warriors numbering around 100 warriors plus 10 horses and pack horses. After much fighting, Kountz's force was forced to withdraw back towards Lexington where they encountered another Native American uprising led by Chief Blue Jacket which ended up resulting in many casualties on both sides including 5 Americans killed and 24 wounded. During this engagement Captain John Smith managed to capture one Indian warrior who later revealed himself as Chief Blue Jacket’s deputy leader – Major Comanche Weahee IIUSN). Ineffective leadership led to strategic defeat at Horseshoe Bend due to lack OF artillery support which compounded with faulty intelligence; moreover a smallpox pandemic preventing combatants from effective immunization drove many Creeks fleeing or defecting leading eventually Toombs' corps successively retreating until only 1/5th true Cherokee remained at Horseshoe Bend proper giving those defending time enoughto retreat without being overwhelmed numerically Stated Lt Col McCulloch “During this engagement Captain John Smith managed to capture one Indian warrior who later revealed himself as Chief Blue Jacket’s deputy leader – Major Comanche Weahee IIUSN)".
The early history of St. Matthews, Kentucky is unknown, but it was probably founded by the Cherokee in the late 18th century. In 1792, General James Wilkinson purchased land at what is now St. Matthews from the Cherokees and named it after himself. The town gradually grew around Wilkinson's plantation until it became an important center for central Kynecte during the years leading up to the American Revolution. The town was also a hot spot for religious worship and political activism during this time. After the revolution, many of the refugees from Kentucky fled to St. Matthews before moving on to other parts of America. In 1819, a group of Englishmen who had settled in Kentucky decided to move westward and establish a colony in what is now Missouri City, Texas. They named their new settlement Saint Marks after their patron saint, which helped spread Christianity among Native Americans living in that area at that time. However, when they arrived in Texas they realized that there were no trees such as oak or maple available for them to build churches under Spanish law so they abandoned Saint Marks soon after its founding instead building missions farther west where these trees did exist. Eventually, Saint Matthews would become one of the most important towns in central Kynecte due to its location within easy access both logistically and politically speaking during its early days as well as its large population growth rate following Wilkinson's purchase of additional land nearby which eventually helped make it an even more influential city throughout its early history
