St. Matthews is a small town in Warren County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,764 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Warren County and the headquarters of the Warren County Sheriff's Office. The town was founded in 1825 by General James Wilkinson as a trading post on the present-day St. Matthews Creek. The name comes from Saint Matthews, an early Christian missionary who preached in these parts. He was killed near this location in 258 AD while evangelizing to Native Americans. In 1853, Colonel John Fenton purchased land at what is now St Matthews Creek for $2,000 and erected a new courthouse thereon. In 1857, he donated land to the Methodist Episcopal Church for use as their parish center and schoolhouse. The first school opened in this building on October 13th, 1857; it was never completed because of lack of money and equipment. In 1865 Colonel Fenton donated another tract of land to the Methodist Episcopal Church for use as their church cemetery; that same year saw also its first baptismal service thereat (the first such event here). In 1870–71, local blacksmiths formed a cooperatives to produce harnesses and other items needed for agricultural production; they continued operations until World War II when they became part of American Motors Corporation's Louisville division (later Chevrolet). After World War II ended, most blacksmithingactivity shifted away from St Matthews towards nearby Perrysburg due to increased competition from machines available domestically (and more affordable labor costs abroad). However, some blacksmiths continued operation into the 1970s out of nostalgia or belief that things might still be done better than ever before under white rule/management! In 1984–85—the last time census figures were available—the population of StMatthews had dwindled to just over 100 individuals; however since then things have slowly been picking up with steady growth (+ 10% annually) through many new businesses established over the years: health spa / daycare / restaurant / printing shop etc.—most recently retail strip mall located on Main Street which includes several convenience stores/gas stations along with several high-end boutiques and restaurants
