In 1802, Reverend John Taylor founded the small town of St. Matthews in western Kentucky. The community was named for Saint Matthews, a bishop who died in 995. In 1819, the first Catholic church in Kentucky was built in St. Matthews. In 1830, St. Matthews became the capital of what is now Kentucky and it remains its seat today. St. Matthews was an important stop on the Underground Railroad during the 1800s because many slaves were able to escape to freedom here. The town also served as a center for agricultural production during this time and helped contribute to KY's growth as a statehood state in 1912. Today, St. Matthews is known for its vibrant culture and its rich history which has been documented through numerous museums and historical sites located within the town limits alone!
The original settlement in this area was called "Milton" after the town of Milton, England. The first post office established in St. Matthews was in 1827. The population of this community increased rapidly during the early 1800s, and by 1830 it had reached 100 residents. By 1840, St. Matthews had a population of 500 people and by 1850 it had grown to 1,200 people. It became an important center for trade and commerce during the mid-19th century, and its economy grew substantially thanks to its location at the mouth of the Cumberland River. In 1857, local members of the Baptist church founded what is now Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in St. Matthews. This institution grew quickly into one of Kentucky's most highly respected seminaries and has been a leading force in Protestant religious education throughout much of Kentucky and America.
