Somerset, Kentucky is a small town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 census. Somerset was founded by John Tipton and his family in 1816. It is named after the then-new county seat of Morristown, Tennessee, which was destroyed by a fire on April 14, 1815. The first settler in Somerset was John Tipton who arrived there in 1816 from Hardin County, Tennessee. He built a cabin near what is now the intersection of U.S. Routes 421 and 23rd Street. A few years later he married Lucy Payne and they moved to what is now the center of town where they erected a log cabin and started trading with other settlers nearby- selling goods such as flour, eggs, bacon and maple syrup. Trade developed into agriculture because of good soil conditions that allowed for crops like cotton and corn to be grown successfully hereabouts. By 1800 the community had about seventy five people living there including twenty seven farmers and their families; however some early residents left for other parts ofKentucky or Missouri due to poor health prospects or lack of land available for farming ventures hereabouts. In 1802 one man – Daniel Boone - established an lumber business northwest of town near what is now State Route 611 In 1830 company pioneer Daniel Boone set out from Somerset on horseback to explore much eastern Kentucky looking for new lands to settle but never returned home again A post office called Somerset was established in1831 by James Henshaw with Wm Fenton as Postmaster In 1840 Isaac Griggs began operating a gristmill west of town Some years later Elijah White started operating another gristmill southwest of town . However it closed down within two months due to financial difficulties . The last mill operation took place in 1907 when Alpheus Hubbard started operations at the old sawmill on Broadway Avenue (now State Route 521) . At that time it produced about four hundred bushels per day
Somerset was a small settlement in what is now Somerset County, Kentucky, United States. The first permanent inhabitants of the area were members of the Shawnee tribe, who arrived in 1793. They built the first house on the present site of Somerset in 1811. In 1830, settlers from Tennessee moved to the area and began farming crops. A sawmill was started in 1839 and continued operation until 1840. The old courthouse on Main Street was constructed in 1845 and served as a county seat until 1862 when it was replaced by a new courthouse at what is now downtown Somerset. A post office operated at Somerset from 1849 to 1865; it was moved to Paducah in 1865.
