The Somerset Volunteer Infantry Regiment was first organized on November 1, 1861. It was known as the "First Kentucky Volunteer Regiment." The regiment served in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War. On October 31, 1865, it was mustered out of service and returned to Kentucky.
Somerset, Kentucky is a small town located in Jefferson County, Kentucky. The population was 992 at the 2010 census. Somerset is part of the Lexington-Fayette, KY-WV Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Somerset was James Kephart who arrived in 1796. The town was founded by J.M. Beare and his family on land donated by General James Hargrave. Colonel John Fenton founded a gentleman's college there in 1815 and named it for himself, John Mason Fenton College of Kentucky (now University of Louisville). In 1840, Confederate general Albert Sidney Johnston decided to winter near Somerset while he planned his invasion of Kentucky; heading south from Elizabethtown through Somerset on February 26th would have brought him into direct conflict with Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant which would have been disastrous for the Confederacy had Johnston been successful in reaching Lexington instead. After the Civil War ended, Somerset reverted back to its original name: James Kephart Settlement before becoming a post office in 1872 and again as an incorporated city in 1907 when it became one of six towns within Jefferson County when that county was created from parts of Anderson and Morehead counties. It has remained an unincorporated community since then due to its small size and lack of transportation infrastructure outside of village formality/mail service only between these two villages which are also served byKentucky State Route 126A which runs concurrent with US 167 bypassing Somerset but just south of it nestles atop hills providing limited access to all other parts of the community save for walking or biking trails that run throughout much of the community including across streams which provide drinking water - an important amenity during drought years when potable water availability declines rapidly due to overgrazing on pastures used for hay bales - until recently without any known means to generate power so residents must rely upon generators provided by private companies PVH Renewables LLC provides solar panels/lightbulbs) Today, many industries still operate here such as agriculture (farming), manufacturing (manufacturing goods made from plastic or fiberglass), health care services (hospitals and clinics), retail trade (stores selling mostly items such as clothing, appliances, books etc.), professional services (lawyers, doctors etc.),and tourism.(sailing clubs) although some businesses closed down during economic downturns over recent years like many stores along SR 126A that closed after being bought out by Mahindra Manufacturing Co., Inc.(a large Indian conglomerate) following riots at their plant nearby sparked largely by poor working conditions among manufacturers employed there Texas Instruments Co.(another Indian conglomerate) followed suit several months later when they too were bought out by Mahindra Manufacturing Co., Inc., making this area one bedroom size apartment complexes filled with poverty stricken employees making little more than minimum wage doing menial tasks for meager pay while their families live paycheck to paycheck.)

Somerset, Kentucky is a small town located in Sullivan County, Kentucky. Somerset was founded on July 3, 1820 by Captain John Searles and his family. The settlement was named after the English county of Somerset, which was then part of the United Kingdom. In 1792, Captain Searles donated land to the tribe of Shawnee for their new village on the Cumberland River. The town post office was established in 1818 and continued serving until it closed in 1907. Today, only a few residences remain in Somerset and most of its businesses have since moved out or been closed down. The first record of settlers arriving in what is now Somerset were French Huguenots who arrived around 1800. They were followed by Kentuckians from Virginia around 1820 and later by Scots-Irish settlers from Ireland around 1830. Over time, other European groups also applied for land grants in what is now Sullivan County including Germans, Italian Americans (who made up about 10 percent of the population at that time), Poles, African Americans (who numbered about 2 percent of the population), and Mormons from Utah who settled between 1847-1851. In 1830, James Kenedy bought 640 acres along the Cumberland River from Colonel John Campbell for $5 per acre northward from where he had been living since 1793 with his wife Susannah LordCampbell and their children John (age 15) and Elizabeth (age 12). He named his property "Somerset" after some nearby hills which he said resembled "the headlands on which Somersetshire [England] is situated." By 1840 Kenedy had increased his holdings to 1123 acres making him one of the largest landowners inSullivan County at that time. One reason given for this growth may have been because there were no other settlements available on what are now known as Kenedy's Hillocks near present day Somerset Boulevard and Stewart Road so people developed these areas as farmland while they built homes or more stores or churches along these roadsides during this period). A group of Scots-Irish men who had emigrated to America together called themselves "The Pioneers" decided to move westward into Indian Territory overland rather than through Canada so they set out from Boston on November 3rd, 1845 disguised as Native Americans under the name "The Kansas Rangers." After reaching Wichita Falls TX on December 4th they made their way east through Oklahoma Territory before finally reaching Indian Territory on January 8thoffering their services to General George Armstrong Custer as scouts during his march across Nebraska into Minnesota - but instead became embroiled in a skirmish with Crazy Horse's cavalry forces near Washakie OK on February 14th that resulted in losses for both sides including three killed/wounded Rangers plus several horses captured by Custer's forces
