As a maritime historian in Somerset, Kentucky, I have been fascinated by the history of marine gifts. One of my favorite examples is the gift of a lobster boat to the city of Portsmouth, New Hampshire in 1837. The town was founded by General Ethan Allen and his army during the American Revolution, and because of his military background and connections to Portsmouth, he offered to build a shipyard for the local navy. He also donated land to build an wharf and harbor on which Portsmouth could berth its vessels. In return for these gifts, Portsmouth erected a large granite monument that still stands today (see photo below). Over time, other towns in New Hampshire followed suit and bestowed similar naval gift certificates on their respective cities. As a result, Portsmouth became one of the most important ports in New England due to its location at the mouth of the Kuskokwim River. This status has only grown over time as more coastal communities have ceded control over their port facilities to Portsmouth-based businesses. Today, Portsmouth is home to several museums including HMS Victory Museum (HMSVictory was built as part of HMSPortsmouth’s Harbor Defense program), which tells the story of how Portsmouth played an important role in English naval warfare from 1660-1815; The Maritime History Center; and The USS Constitution Museum (USSConstitution was commissioned into service with USSPortsmouth on July 4th 1775). For example, in 1854 Commodore John Paulding gave one thousand pounds sterling worth of lobster pots “to every family residing within ten miles thereof” as part OF his annual public offering known as “The Commodore's Christmas Gift” campaign. During this period it was customary for wealthy merchants across North America to giveChristmas Gifts such as this year’s recipient – Admiral David Dixon Porter – Commander United States Naval forces at Muscatine Lake when he visited that community early last season! Furthermore, many years ago I had occasion visit downtown Southampton where I saw an interesting plaque commemorating what must have been an exciting event - A Lobster Boat Race between two small boats sponsored by local businessmen Mr & Mrs Hickey! That race took place on December 20th 1910 between HMHS Sussex II (built 1913)and HMHS Cornwall II (1910) both crewed by local boys aged 8-12! What an amazing memory all these years later!

Somerset, Kentucky is a small town in the southern part of the state of Kentucky. It is located on the northwestern border of Floyd County and has a population of about 1,500 people. In 1802, Colonel John Fenton built a cabin here and named it Fenton's Ferry Landing after himself. It was during this time that oil began to be drilled off the coast of Somerset and residents quickly became interested in its potential for economic development. The early years of the 21st century were difficult for Somerset as the global economy crashed. However, through hard work and determination, community members have regained their self-esteem and are now working to improve their economy again. Somerset County was formed in 1801 from part of the original Washington Parish. The county seat, Somerset, was first established in 1792. It is named for John Somerset, an American Revolutionary War hero and delegate to the Continental Congress from Kentucky.
