Somerset is a town in Marshall County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. Somerset is located on the Louisville–Jefferson County line. The first settler in what would become Somerset was James Witherspoon in 1812. He and his family arrived from New York City and started a small farm three miles east of present-day Somerset on the banks of the River Don. In 1830, Witherspoon married Mary Auld who came from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. They had five children: James (1830-1902), John (1832-1911), Martha (1834-1928), Sarah Elizabeth (1836-1920) and Lydia Minerva (1838-1920). In 1835, another pioneer named George Washington Shannon bought land just west of present day Somerset and founded Shannon's Mills about two miles northeast of town on the left bank of the Don River. By 1840, over 10 families were living there with 5 mills producing cloth goods including seeders, shearers and dyers; 2 schools; 3 churches; 4 stores; 6 blacksmith shops; 1 sawmill; 1 cooperage; and 4 citizen militia companies. In 1845, parts of present day Somerset were included in Union Township when it was organized as part of Marshall county. It wasn't until 1861 that a post office called "Somerset" was established in what is now Marshall County by order of President Abraham Lincoln after he designated portions of northern Hardin county as Confederate territory during the American Civil War based on their pro slavery views. At this time most residents lived along both sides of the river near wherepresent day Seymour Street runs parallel to it south to north before turning westward towards downtown Louisville proper which lies to its east across Orange Avenue (& later I-65) . The original village plat for "Somerset" shown below includes all current areas lying within modern day Marshall County limits save for an area bordering onto neighboring Jeffersonville to its southeast & southwest while extending into Boyle Heights & Liberty Hill neighborhoods east & west respectively . It should be noted that these boundaries are not always accurately depicted on government maps or documents as they may have been reworked following local events or changes over time such as when westernMarshallcounty seceded from Kentucky to form Indiana in 1800 & easternMarshallcounty followed suit in 1861
