Somerset, Kentucky is a small town located in the geographic region of Appalachia. The population of Somerset was 3,893 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Lexington, Kentucky Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1810 by Captain John Smith and his family. Captain Smith's father had been born in Somerset County and died there during an Indian attack. Captain Smith’s mother, Mary Smith, moved to Somerset from Caroline County in 1793. In 1827 Colonel James Hinton purchased the land that now makes up most of downtown Somerset from General Samuel Hood for $5,000. The town grew rapidly after this purchase and by 1830 it had a population of 4,500 people. At its peak, Seymour contained more than 12 stores and 150 homes. By 1860 the population had decreased to 1,800 people due to waves of immigration and industrialization throughout central Kentucky. However, some elements of Somerset continue to remain strong such as its close-knit community spirit which has helped keep the local economy afloat through tough times. Today subsistence farming remains a mainstay of life for many residents while businesses continue to thrive with services like accounting or real estate becoming increasingly popular among locals and visitors alike

Somerset is a town in Clay County, Kentucky, United States. It was founded in 1807 and was named for the English county of Somerset. The population was 7,856 at the 2010 census. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Somerset in 1807 when Captain James Kirkpatrick and his family traveled from Canada via the Cumberland Gap. They were seeking land to purchase for their colony of Virginia. In 1812, Colonel James Wilkinson purchased 2,000 acres (800 hectares) of land east of present-day Somerset on the Ohio River. He renamed it Wilkinson's Creek after himself and his son, General James Wilkinson Sr., who had commanded British forces during the War of 1812. In 1830, John Swayne bought 1,500 acres (500 hectares) northeast of present-day Somerset from Colonel Wilkinson to form part of what would become Grayson County. In addition to its namesake county seat – which became known as "Somerset" on January 1st, 1800 – Saundersville (later Manchester), Clarksburg (now Huntington), Middletown (later Lebanon), Athens (later Paducah), Bedford Heights (now Decatur), Westford and other towns developed around industries such as brick making and weaving; two dozen stores were established by 1840 alone. By 1860 there were twenty-six businesses with a total payroll of $1 million(). A post office was founded at Somerset in 1827; it remained open until 1959 when it merged with nearby Lexington post office to form one large post office called Lexington Post Office & Postal Service Ltd.. The early days of firefighting in Clay County were difficult because there was no water system available to put out fires and most people lived close to where they worked or owned property that could be used for burning purposes only. Additionally, many farms did not have any protection against Indians who scalped cattle or burned crops so firefighters had to use arrows or spears if they needed to fight an Indian raiders/invaders/ attackers during this time period
Somerset was founded in 1795 by John Somerset, Jr. It was named after the Somerset River. The town became a county seat in 1836. In 1861, it was made an independent state of the United States.
