Somerset, Kentucky is a small town located in west-central Kentucky. The population was 1,863 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Somerset County and lies about 20 miles northwest of Lexington,Kentucky. The land that makes up Somerset County was donated to the government by early settlers in 1802 as part of a land grant program created to promote settlement in what was then Indian Territory. The first courthouse and jail were built in 1811 on lands donated by Judge John Cloyd. In 1821, the town of Somerset was founded by James Hamlin and other early settlers on the east side of the Cumberland River. The hamlet website describes it as "an oasis in a dry region". In 1865, when Winchester, Virginia became an independent state, much of central Kentucky remained within Virginia's borders. However, because Winchester had been one of the original settlements along the Central Pacific Railroad and because many Virginians had owned property in central Kentucky since before independence, some eastern Williamson County residents decided to become subscribers to Winchester's new political entity - an idea that soon spread to adjacent western Hardin County. As a result, on December 12th 1865, William Hargrave issued an ordinance creating what would become Somerset County - named for George Washington's grandson who had died days earlier during President Lincoln's visit to Richmond (the ill-fated Emancipation Proclamation had been issued just hours before). The first post office opened in 1896; it moved from its original location near present day Mount Sterling to its current site about three miles southeast of downtown on US Highway 606. During World War II (1939-1945), much important military activity took place nearby at Fort Knox Army Airfield including strategic bombing raids against Germany; this area also served as munitions storage facilities after 1945 until they were closed down due to environmental concerns. Today there are several businesses which contribute significantly to Somerset’s economy: quarrying (especially limestone), printing & publishing (including two papers published daily within three blocks of each other close to downtown), hotel/motel services (particularly those associated with golf courses throughout town) and agricultural production such as hayrides around Elk Lake or apple picking outside town limits late into October/early November.
