On May 6th 1865, after three years of fighting and countless casualties for both sides., General Sherman surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia with over 1 million casualties on his side (over 190 thousand Americans were killed and wounded). The end of World War II finally ended with Japan’s surrender on September 2nd 1945 – four days after Allied troops had retaken Tokyo from Japanese control
