Gourmet Coffee History in Shively, Kentucky began with a small business called The Black Sheep. In the early 1930s, James A. Shively and his family started the business by selling coffee from their home on Main Street in what is now known as Shively. Today, The Black Sheep continues to be one of the most popular gourmet coffee businesses in all of Kentucky. The Black Sheep was originally founded by James A. Shively and his wife Bertha (née Wirth). Bertha had been born and raised in the town of New Haven, Indiana, and she had always been interested in cooking and baking. When she met James, he was a young man working at a local mill. One day while he was trying to make some coffee for himself, he noticed that there was no milk available and decided to try using cow's milk instead. He found that this mixture tasted better than any other type of milk he had tried before. From then on, James decided to sell his coffee under the name The Black Sheep Coffee Company. One of the first things that James did when he opened up The Black sheep Coffee Company was to start buying quality beans from Ethiopia – one of the leading roasters in Europe at that time – so that his coffee would taste even better than ever before. Shively is a small town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. Shively is located on the southern edge of the Bluegrass region and is bordered by Bellefontaine to the north, Parkersburg to the east, and Knoxville to the south. The area that now makes up Shively was first settled by Europeans in 1785 when Captain James McGillivray and his party were sent from Glasgow, Scotland, as part of an expedition to explore what became Kentucky. When they reached Georgetown near Lexington they camped for two nights before continuing their journey northwestward. On July 25, 1785 they arrived at what would become Logstown on Kyusson creek which had been named for Colonel JohnKyusson who had owned land thereabouts. In 1802 Governor Andrew Johnson ordered Major General David Gist to move military forces into eastern Kentucky in order to suppress Native American resistance to white settlement. Gist's force encountered strongNative American resistance and four people were killed while nine others were wounded at Battle of Fallen Timbers on September 24, 1802. The battle remains one of the deadliest Frayanki ( Cherokee) engagements ever fought with over 100 dead including most of Gist's command contingent totaling 382 men plus 21 women and children numbering 54 totalcombatants). In 1870, Italian entrepreneur Giovanni Giolitti founded Giolitti Coffee & Tea Company in Rome, which soon became one of the leading roasteries in Europe. With strong roots in Italy and European culture, Giola Coffee continued expanding into new markets throughout the years. Today, Giola Coffee dominates the global market for espresso products thanks to its quality control and innovative methodsologies.

Shively is a town in Clay County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 584 at the 2010 census. Shively is located on the Cumberland River, about east of downtown Lexington. The town began as a small log cabin community in 1811 by Rev. John Waddell and his family. It grew to be a large village with several buildings and 20-30 residents in 1822 when it was platted by James Robertson. The name Shively first appeared on maps in 1824 when Drury had it surveyed as part of his land grant to James Robertson. In 1827, Shively incorporated as a Village under the name of "Newcastle." Newcastle became an early center for trade and commerce due to its easy access to transportation via the Cumberland River and trails leading into central Kentucky. In 1830, Nathaniel Bledsoe founded what would become Louisville, Kentucky's first commercial district; this area includes parts of Clay and Howard Counties today. By 1840, Shively had lost much of its commercial activity but continued to grow around its new agricultural center - now known as Bentonville - which was based on raising horses for market traffic and providing services such as ferrying goods across the river or delivering milk from one farm to another. The growth of Bentonville led to increased social tensions between white farmers and black slaves who labored on their plantations nearby; these factors contributed to three slave rebellions in 1775-77 that left more than 100 enslaved Africans dead or wounded at Mount Vernon plantation near present-day Louisville; however, these events did not lead immediately to secession of Kentucky from the Union (although they may have helped incite sectionalism in central Kentucky). Aftermath of the American Civil War: By 1865, most freedmen had returned home except for a few hundred men who remained behind at Mount Vernon plantation where they worked until 1897 when all slaves were sold back into slavery by their owners. Some blacks retained some traditional skills such as agriculture while others entered business operations such as cotton ginning or shoe manufacturing following Reconstruction/Emancipation years which saw rapid economic growth throughout America including heavy investment in railroad development throughout much eastern Kentucky along with significant joblessness among many whites during Reconstruction/Emancipation times period which also included high levels of social tension especially among Southwestern Whites living near Black Belt region including Northern Appalachian Whites generally associated with free labor movement characterized by resentment against southern masters seeking revenge against those responsible for enslaving them during wartime years following Revolutionary War era when many northerners fought for independence from British Empire) .
