Shively is a small town in Johnson County, Kentucky, located on the banks of the Beargrass River. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. Shively is home to the Shively Manufacturing Company and its two primary businesses: an agricultural products company and a paper mill. The first settlement in what is now Shively was made by French fur traders in 1784. The first permanent settler in what is now Johnson County was John Daugherty, who built a log cabin on the current site of Caldwellsville in 1811. By 1814, David Brown had moved from Illinois to begin farming around this location. In 1824, James Stephenson purchased land including present-day Shively from David Brown for $1,000. In 1830, George Washington Dixon erected a log cabin near present day Caldwellsville on his farmstead known as Dixon's Grove. This structure served as a post office until it was burned down in 1865 by Union troops during the American Civil War. A new post office was constructed at Caldwellsville in 1872; it remained in operation until 1971. In 1864, William Waddell founded Waddell's Lumber Company with lumberfrom nearby Tipton County. By 1870, Waddell's Lumber Company had become one of Kentucky's leading lumber companies with operations at various locations throughout the state. In 1913, Waddell's Lumber Company merged with other companies to form The United States Steel Corporation (USS). USS became one of America's largest manufacturers of steel after World War II and began producing aluminum cans and other items outside of Kentucky until its bankruptcy in 1984%. Shively is a small town in Bourbon County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 2,643 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville–Jefferson County metropolitan area. The first evidence that Shively was there can be found in 1812 when James Shively and his family came from Kentucky to purchase land in what is now Bourbon County. In 1814, he married Margaret Hill and they started a farm with their four children - James Fenton Shively (1815-1882), John Thomas Shively (1817-1885), Cynthia Jane Shively (1819-1900) and Charles Augustus "Cappy" Shrive (1821-1902). They also had two daughters - Lillie Aiken Hill (born 1824) and Carrie Chapman Smith (born 1830). In 1835, James Fenton Shive bought some more land which he used as his farmstead until 1840 when he decided to move to Topeka, Kansas Territory. He later moved back to McConnellsburg, KY but died there on January 6th 1863 at the age of 78 years old. He was buried at Mount Hope Cemetery within walking distance of his home in McConnellsburg where many friends gathered each year for his funeral services attended by local dignitaries including Governor John Donelson and members of the U.S. Congress such as Congressman Thaddeus Stevens of Massachusetts . His wife Margaret preceded him into death on May 7th 1865 at the age of 79 years old due to complications from childbirth after eight months of labor with her only child Charles Augustus "Cappy" Shrive born three days before she did. Their daughter Lillie Aiken Hill became Mrs. Wm Henson who lived near Mount Hope Cemetery until her death on December 24th 1970 aged 93 years old having served as honorary president during her mother's lifetime while living alone in a house on Lexington Road next door to where Mount Hope Cemetery stands today
