Navy Deployed Gift History in Shelbyville, Kentucky began with the USS Lexington (BB-57) on December 8, 1941. The ship was sunk by Japanese forces while attempting to reach Pearl Harbor. All of the crew and passengers were lost except for five seamen who managed to swim to safety. Their gift is now part of history and can be found on display at the USS Lexington Museum in Fremont, California. The USS Missouri (BB-63) was also deployed during World War II and served as a weather ship in Hawaiian waters before being loaned to the United States Navy in 1944. She played a significant role in the Battle of Saipan where she helped protect American forces from an invading force led by Japan’s Emperor Hirohito. The ship eventually returned to her home port after being decommissioned and sold for scrap metal in 1969. USS Enterprise (CV-6) was another military vessel that served during World War II. She was converted into a naval hospital after arriving at San Diego, California, and operated out of Pearl Harbor until 1945 when she moved back to Hawaii where she joined the fleet under Rear Admiral James Popham Jr., Commander Fleet Medical Service Pacific Fleet. In 1951 she moved back to San Francisco Bay where she remained until 1958 when she was transferred back to Okinawa where she remains today as a museum piece. Her gift is now on display at Naval Hospital Noblesville, Indiana along with other military equipment donated by sailors throughout the years

In 1875, the town was renamed "Shelbyville" after General Andrew Jackson and the town's first mayor was named John Shelby.
