The Shelbyville National Guard was organized on November 10, 1861. The original unit consisted of only men. It was the 1st Kentucky Volunteer Infantry Regiment. The regiment served in the Union Army during the American Civil War and saw action at Shiloh, First Bull Run and Antietam. On December 12, 1861, President Abraham Lincoln called for a volunteer national guard force to protect southern Kentucky from Confederate forces. The first units were raised in Shelbyville and other eastern Kentucky towns. On July 15, 1862, the 1st Kentucky Volunteer Infantry Regiment was redesignated as the 9th Tennessee Volunteer Infantry Regiment and mustered into service at Danville, Virginia. After serving in that state for two years, it transferred to General John Buell's cavalry command in October 1862 and fought against ConfederateGeneral Robert E Mitchel's raid through eastern Tennessee on October 25-26. That unit also participated in the Battle of Perryville on November 6 where it lost 11 percent of its strength due to disease (the battle is still studied by military scientists). In February 1865, after General Ulysses S Grant had taken over command of all Union armies following Sherman's march through Georgia and Alabama; the 9th Tennessee Volunteers were sent to Knoxville to join up with that army under General Jubal Early. They fought at Chickamauga until early September when they joined up with General Early's army near Marietta enabling them to participate in some of those engagements which led to Atlanta Campaign later that year including operations around Murfreesboro on January 18-24 1865; Battle Of Resaca Bridge on May 16; Battle Of Missionary Ridge on June 14; Siege And Breakout At Chattanooga On September 19-20 1865) When hostilities ended federal troops withdrew from south central Tennessee but continued presence until April 30 1870 when all remaining troops left for home

Shelbyville is a small town in Jefferson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1802 by a group of refugees from Great Britain. Shelbyville became an important port on the Ohio River and grew rapidly due to its location and production of shipping goods. The growth of the railroad made Shelbyville an even more important commercial center. In 1902, Shelbyville merged with nearby Huntingdon to form one large city. However, this merger did not pans out and after several years of planning and disagreement over local politics, both towns reverted back to their separate identities in 1916. Today, Shelbyville remains a largely rural community with a small population of residents who work in the local economy or are visitors attractions such as farmers markets or antique stores outside the downtown district near the riverbank. There is also a small amount of development around Interstate 64 which has led to increased activity in some portions of town while preserving much of its rural character
Shelbyville was founded in 1824 by Major General James Shelby. The town developed around a sawmill, and began to grow rapidly due to its location on the Cumberland River. In 1830, the town became the capital of Kentucky and was known as "The City of Liberty." In 1836, General Shelby Battle fought a battle at nearby Lexington in which he lost his life. This event helped start the American Civil War and led to the town's decline. However, it regained popularity during Reconstruction and returned to obscurity after World War II. Today, Shelbyville is an agricultural community with a small population.
