Shelbyville is a town inf the Commonwealth of Kentucky, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington–Fayette Urban area and is the county seat of Hardin County. The first people to settle in Shelbyville were English settlers who arrived in 1792. Many of these early pioneers came from Somerset, England. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson founded what would become Hardin County and named it for General John Covington, an American soldier who had fought against British forces during the War of 1812. Shelbyville was established as a town on December 1, 1821 by order of Governor James Denny. The townsite lay along the Cumberland River between Salem and Hopkinsvillc; it was named for Major-General Isaac Shelby, commander of cavalry in India during that time period. Prior to its incorporation as a town, Shelbyville served as a point for travelers traveling eastward on the Cumberland River from Lexington or westward from Nashville through Knox County overriver to Greeneville before crossing over into Hardin County. The first post office opened in Shelbyville on July 2, 1830; it was later renamed Hopkinsvillc after Averell Ewing Hopkins (1807-1886), one of America's most important entrepreneurs and philanthropists during this time period. In 1870, Forrest Jarrell developed land south of downtown near Henderson Cemetery which he dubbed "The Promised Land." This fertile farming district soon became known throughout eastern Kentucky for its sweet corn crops and other agricultural products grown thereabouts; within a few years such regions as Putnam & Letcher counties also began producing large quantitiesof tobacco also consistent with wagon trade across much of Appalachia at this time span In 1895 hardwood forests covering more than 100 square miles were reported growing north and east side streets running through rural areas stretching from Jeffersontown to Northport just outside downtown Louisville experienced their first boom due largely to market demand generated by Appalachian migration spurred by new industrial opportunities opening up around Lawrenceburg/Jefferson City (now Parsonsburg).
