Shelbyville is a town in Shelby County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 9,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville-Jefferson County, Kentucky Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1799, General David Wilkinson founded the town on land he purchased from John Sevier. The first store was built in 1802 by Isaac McCoy and opened to customers on October 20th. In 1830, J. C. Goodrich built the first post office in Shelbyville and served as its first clerk until it was moved to downtown in 1865. A fire destroyed most of downtown in 1885 but control of the building returned to city hall later that year when a new building was erected next door on Fifth Street which still serves as the town's seat today. In 1860, two brothers named James and Samuel Dixon bought an acre (0 hectares) of land adjoining Shelbyville for $500 and began farming it with their horses and cattle until they sold it off in 1870 to Hiram Claypoole who founded Claypoole Land Company which operated until 1880 when it went bankrupt due to overspending on crops that had not yet matured. The Clapton family continued working on their farmstead until 1913 when they sold it to Hennie Ransom who developed what is now known as Old Hickory Shopping Center adjacent to their home near Fourth Street and Court Avenue east of downtown where they resided until his death in 1978 which left his widow Gertrude de laHalle holding title to approximately 2 acres (10 hectares). On December 15th 1905 Drs Frank Davenport & Mabel Morse became residents of Shelbyville following their marriage at historic First Presbyterian Church located just east of Main Street opposite Knox’s department store then called “The Palace” after Confederate general Pte Andrew Johnson’s home during the American Civil War days within walking distance of what would become known as Davenport Field later renamed “Memorial Park” after both men were killed therein while serving as US surgeons during World War I – a fact which has been generally overlooked by many researchers up until now – only recently have historians begun piecing together this important historical detail related thereto even though there are numerous earlier records extant pertaining thereto documenting such an event taking place right here within spitting distance! Drs Frank Davenport & Mabel Morse married December 15th 1905 at First Presbyterian Church located just east of Main Street opposite Knox’s department store then called “The Palace” after Confederate general Pte Andrew Johnson’s home during the American Civil War days within walking distance of what would become known as Davenport Field later renamed “Memorial Park” after both men were killed therein while serving as US surgeons during World War I; a fact which has been generally overlooked by many researchers up till now – only recently have historians begun piecing together this important historical detail related thereto even though there are numerous earlier records extant pertaining thereto documenting such an event taking place right here within spitting distance! On February 7th 1906 Dr Fenton Ladd came into possession thereof from Mrs de laHalle through her husband Harry beingquerenty with her late husband Joe Hostetler so recognizing this significant event thereby becoming one half owner thereof jointly with Harry De Campo through deed #3 dated February 7th 1906 provenance confirmed hereinabove among other pertinent identifying documents subsequently cited hereinbelow!
