Shelbyville is a small town located in the Shenandoah Valley of Kentucky. The population was 2,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville metropolitan area. The name of the town was derived from General Robert Ewell's victory over British forces at Battle of Fallen Timbers on December 16, 1813, near present-day Louisville. At the time, Shelbyville consisted of just 12 families and had no school or dispensary. In 1907, Shelbyville became a city under an act passed by the Kentucky Legislature. At that time it had a population of 4,000 people and employed only 100 residents out of a total workforce of 1,500 people. However, since then there has been an increase in employment with the addition of new businesses such as KFC and FedEx Ground to downtown Shelbyville and other areas around town including Harrisonburg Village shopping center which opened in 2007 adjacent to Interstate 65/exit 11A (the old I-65). In 2012 alone there were new jobs added to downtown Shelbyville with construction projects for two hotels/motels adjacent to I-65 known as "The Landing" Project and "The Landing II". Today many locals consider themselves artisans due to their active local arts community as well as its proximity to major metropolitan areas such as Philadelphia (30 minutes away) and Cincinnati (45 minutes away). There are also several large factories located within walking distance including PepsiCo's massive bottling plant just outside town limits; Ford Motor Company’s largest manufacturing plant east of Lexington; Arch Coal’s Shay coal mine about two miles northeast; AT&T’s huge copper smelter northwest corner; Halliburton Energy Services LLC’s oil refinery southwest corner across from US 62), all producing goods for local markets primarily within driving distance but also exported products such as Hammond's gas station south west corner across from US 61), another successful business model for this small town with few regulations allowing them to produce high quality domestically made items without competition from larger cities nearby

Over time, the town's economy shifted from agriculture to manufacturing; during World War II it produced munitions for the war effort. In recent years, however, Shelbyville has been shrinking as its population declines and businesses move away.

In 1811, General Andrew Jackson moved his army from Nashville to Clarksville to confront British forces under Lieutenant Colonel Arthur Campbell. The battle ended with a victory for Jackson and the Americans. After this successful campaign, General Wilkinson decided to move his family from Shelbyville to Athens, Alabama.
